Advantages and Disadvantages of Fossil Fuels Jessica, Myah and Abdullah
How much coal is required to run 100-Watt bulb, 24 hours a day, for one year? Light Bulb’s Power = 0.1 kW (100/1000) Number of hours in a year = 8,760 hours (365*24) Total energy in a year = 876 kW (8,760*0.1) Thermal energy content of coal = 6,150 kWh/ton Thermal energy of coal to electricity = 40% Electricity generated = 2,460 (0.4 *6,150) Coal required = 325 kg (876/2,460 = 0.357 tons)
Advantages Formed from fossilized plants and animals, making it easy to find. Generates huge amounts of electricity. Power plants using fossil fuels can be almost anywhere.
Disadvantages Non- renewable resource Releases gases into atmosphere Won’t always be available Pollution and acid rain
