Why Study Geography? It affects where people live. It affects how people live. It affects the outcome of major events.

Theme # 1: Location Where is it??

Location: There are two types of LOCATION!! Absolute Relative

Absolute Location: Absolute Location is found by using… Two specific line types Latitude Longitude

Absolute Location: Latitude Lines AKA Parallels Latitude lines are drawn from: East to West Latitude lines measure: North to South

Absolute Location: The Major Line of LATITUDE is the: Equator It splits the Earth into: the Northern and Southern Hemispheres

Define Hemisphere: Half of a globe (in our case the Earth)

Human/Environment Interaction: How do we interact with our environment?

HEI: Human/Environment Interaction explains how people use and change their environment.

Does the environment affect where we do these activities?

HEI: Changes to the environment can be Good Bad, or Both!

Bad Deforestation- is the widespread destruction of the worlds forest. Pollution is the contamination of the environment of human acts. Global warming- rising of the average temperature world wide. Desertification- is the process of fertile land being transformed into deserts. Usually caused by deforestation or over grazing of animals. Ozone layer- being damaged by industrial air pollutants.

Good Irrigation- brings water from nearby sources to areas where crops are grown. Egypt and china use irrigation methods. Terrace farming- cutting out flat areas into near vertical slopes to allow farming. Roads- roads allow civilizations to exchange goods and services as well as invade and conquer. Romans and Incas built extensive roads throughout their empires. Canals – are man made waterways used for tarde and transportation.
