Madam C.J. Walker 1867-1919 By: Ariel N. Redmond

Introduction Madam C.J. Walker was very successful, but also inspiring. She became a self-made millionaire by selling many of her products, and she believed that other people could be just as successful as her. Her life was rough and hard, and it took her many steps to success, but as I said, she believes you can just be as successful.

Early Life Her parents names were Owen and Minerva Breedlove, and were slaves, but finally escaped. Her siblings were named Louvenia, Alexander, James and Owen. Her parents died, and Madam CJ Walker had to live with Louvenia. She was born in Lousiana,1867 December 23rd- 1919 May 25th, and lived to be 51 years old.

Accomplishments She donated freely to churches, schools, hospitals and more. She successfully became a self-made millionaire by selling her hair solutions. She got married and came up with the sales name for her “Madam C.J. Walker”, and that helped sell her product. She had a daughter name A’Lelia.

Obstacles Madam C.J. Walker’s parent’s died, and it took a while for her to get over it. She didn’t like moving to different places for work reasons because it was hard packing, then unpacking at the new home. Divorcing her husband was hard because she changed her name because of C.J. Walker, and that helped her with her business. Getting sick was hard for her because her doctor said she needed to rest, but she didn’t because her business would be bad since she wouldn’t be working.

Influences Her friends influenced her by saying they loved her hair solution. Her husband C.J. Walker influenced her by changing her name to Madam C.J. Walker, so she could sell her product better. Her daughter influenced her to keep working by helping her with her business. While still going on with her business, she got inspired to not quit and keep going, since her business was great!

Later Life She married CJ Walker. She got sick and died because of not resting and high blood pressure. She became a grandmother. After she died, her last words, “I want to live to help my race”, came true!

Conclusion Madam C.J. Walker was the queen of all beauty supplies. She helped many people with their hair, and even other situations! With all Madam C.J. Walker’s inventions on beauty supplies, she has influenced many hair stylists today.

Fun Facts The same year that Madam C.J. Walker got divorced from her husband C.J. Walker, their daughter A’Lelia adopted a girl named Mae Bryant. Madam C.J. Walker owned a mansion near the Hudson River that was called Villa Lewaro, and it had 30 rooms in it! When her business got going, she studied penmanship, letter writing, and public speaking. She got married twice.

Walker left her daughter A’Lelia in charge of one of her places where she worked, and she moved to a different one. Her siblings all had unique personalities, and different occupations. Madam C.J. Walker was one of the most successful hair stylists in the world.
