Major injuries An ambulance should be called by dialing Do not attempt to call an ambulance by calling the University switchboard or another University department. This will only cause unnecessary delay. Someone should be sent to the front door of the building to look out for and direct the ambulance. A first aider should be contacted to administer first aid to the casualty while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

Minor injuries First aid boxes/cabinets are located in, or near, all laboratories. Staff and students should ensure they are aware of the nearest location of first aid supplies. A first aider should be contacted and asked to assist with any injury except for the most minor of cuts or scratches. Even minor scratches should be washed thoroughly in cold running water before applying a plaster. The assistance of a first aider is particularly important if you are injured while working with substances, which could cause harm if they entered the body through a break in the skin.
