Reference Book Adventure

What Can You Do? You are writing a report about chimpanzees for your science class. You want to find a map to include in your report. Which is the best reference book for you to use? Biography Dictionary Atlas Thesaurus Encyclopedia

Excellent!!! An atlas is a collection of maps, so it would be a great place to look for maps. You look in an atlas and find out that some chimpanzees are found in Africa.

What Now? In your research you find out that Jane Goodall was a scientist who studied chimpanzees. Which book would be the best research source to find out information about her life? Biography Dictionary Atlas Thesaurus Encyclopedia

Great work!! A biography is a book that tells about a person’s life. You could discover all about Jane Goodall if you found a biography about her.

What’s Next? You also discover that chimpanzees have prehensile toes. You don’t know what that means. What is the best source to use to find the definition of prehensile? Biography Dictionary Atlas Thesaurus Encyclopedia

You are exactly right! A dictionary will give you the definitions of words you do not know. Prehensile means that the toes can grasp or hold.

What Now? You now want to find information about a chimpanzee’s habitat, physical features, and eating habits. Which reference book would be the best to use to find all this information? Biography Dictionary Atlas Thesaurus Encyclopedia

Yes—you are exactly right! An encyclopedia is the best reference source to find information on a topic.

What’s Next? You find out that chimpanzees are primates. You would like to find another word that is a synonym for primates. Which would be the best resource to use? Biography Dictionary Atlas Thesaurus Encyclopedia

You are correct!! A thesaurus is a reference book that gives synonyms of words. Two synonyms for the word primates are monkeys and apes.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have completed your reference book adventure!!!
