Rocks and Minerals  By Sean Stanton

Types of Rocks  There are 3 types of rocks  Igneous  Sedimentary  Metamorphic

Igneous Rocks  Igneous rocks are formed by hot molten material that cool’s and hardens.  The word igneous means fire made.  This m molten material may cool above or under the earths surface.  obsidian

Sedimentary Rocks  Sedimentary rocks are formed by layers that tell age over time.  an example of a sedimentary rock is sandstone.

 To see a volcano in action click here.here

Metamorphic rocks  The word metamorphic means changed in form.  Metamorphic rocks are formed by heat and/or pressure.  An example of a metamorphic rock is marble.  Marble is made from limestone heated and pressurized.

The Rock cycle  The rock cycle is a never ending process where rocks are changed.  Without the rock cycle there would not be any rocks.

Minerals  Minerals are what rocks are made of.  You can tell a mineral by luster, color, hardness and streak plate  An example of a mineral is quartz

Vocabulary  Minerals-a naturally occurring substance, neither a plant nor animal.  Igneous rocks –fire made rock formed from melted rock material.  Sedimentary rocks-rocks formed from bits or layers of rocks segmented together.  Relative age-the age of something compared to the age of another thing.  Rock cycle-a never ending process in witch rocks are changed. Metamorphic rock- a rock formed by heat and/or pressure.
