Analysis of Urban Sprawl in Cookeville, TN Using GIS Technology By Brian O. Whitworth

-Some Questions 1.) What is GIS? -Geographic Information Systems -computer system capable of capturing, storing, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced information

2.)What is Urban Sprawl? -The unplanned, uncontrolled spreading of urban development into areas adjoining the edge of a city. -an aggregation or continuous network of urban communities

3.))Why should we be concerned ? Tennessee: *14 th largest growing state in the lower 48 * 4 th fastest rate of land development in U.S.

what is being done? *PC 1101-Growth Policy: requires local governments to develop and coordinate plans for growth. Two goals: 1.)correct out-of-control annexations and municipal incorporations that were creating conflicts among cities & counties 2.) prompt local governments to manage growth more effectively-“ more closely match the timing of the timing of development to the provision of public services” or to minimize urban sprawl.

Urban Growth Boundaries:  every municipality must establish an urban growth boundary, large enough and well-located to accommodate projected “high-density” growth for 20 years

Population growth Cities over 50,000

Population Growth Cities Under 50,000

Increase in Residential Homes and Commercial/Industrial Businesses

CONCLUSION -By 2015 Cookeville’s population will increase ~ 22% -Apartments will increase ~25-50% -Residential housing will increase ~8% with quad 4 showing the greatest Amount of growth
