New York City is composed of 5 boroughs: Manhattan Queens Staten Island Bronx Brooklyn

BRONX

Bronx is the most northern borough of NYC and the only one on the continent. It’s also the poorest. Its population is mainly composed of black and hispanic people. It’s the crib of hip hop music.

BROOKLYN

Brooklyn is the most populated borough in New York City Brooklyn is the most populated borough in New York City. It is situated on Long Island, south of Queens. It is separated from Manhattan by the East River. People go from Brooklyn to Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge.

QUEENS

Queens is on Long Island. It’s the largest borough in NYC Queens is on Long Island. It’s the largest borough in NYC. It’s also the most multi-racial. It’s the home of Kennedy and laGuardia airports, the two major airports in New York City. It’s also the location of Flushing Meadows Park, the US open tennis tournament.

STATEN ISLAND

Staten Island is separated from the rest of New York City by New York Bay. Until 1975 it was called Richmond. It’s the most suburban district. It’s accessible to Brooklyn via the Verrazzano Bridge.

The Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty is situated on Liberty Island in New York City harbor. It welcomes people coming from Europe by boat.

Ellis Island Ellis Island, facing Liberty Island, was once the building where people who immigrated from Europe to the States in the 19th century had to be inspected. It closed on November 12, 1954 and today it’s a museum dedicated to the emigrants who peopled the USA.

Broadway Broadway is the longest street in Manhattan Broadway Broadway is the longest street in Manhattan. It goes from north to south and crosses the whole island up to the Bronx. It’s the place where you must go if you want to see shows and plays.

Central Park Central Park is the largest park in New York City Central Park Central Park is the largest park in New York City. It is in the center of Manhattan. It’s the place where New Yorkers love to run and walk. People can skate on the lake in winter. Central Park is the lung of New York City out of the polluted streets.

Chrysler Building Chrystler Building is one of the most famous buildings in NYC. It was built between 1928 and 1930. It was the highest building in NYC between 1930 and 1931, before the construction of the Empire State Building.

Empire State Building The Empire State Building was built between 1930 and 1931and was then the highest building in the world. After 9,11 2001 it once again became the highest building in NYC and the 2nd in the USA after the Sears Tower in Chicago. It has got 102 floors.

The Flatiron Building The Flatiron Building or Fuller Building was built in 1902. It’ s one of the symbols of NYC and it’s frequently seen on tv and in commercials. It has got 25 floors and is only 285 ft high (87 meters)

WORLD TRADE CENTER AND GROUND ZERO

Ground Zero is the place where The Twin Towers or WTC which were destroyed on September, 11 2001 after a terrorist attack. Now there stands a memorial. The Twin Towers used to be the highest towers in New York City. They were completed in 1970 and 1971.

ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER It was built from 2006 to May 2013 where the Twins once stood. It is 541 m tall and it is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. It was built to resist any attacks.

Rockefeller Center Rockefeller Center is a large commercial center situated on Manhattan island. It’s a complex of 19 buildings which were built by the Rockefeller family in 1939. Rockefeller plaza is the heart of the center.

Brooklyn Bridge Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridge in NYC. It crosses East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn. It opened in May 1883 after 13 years of construction.

Verrazzano Bridge It’s a double-decked suspension bridge between Staten Island and Brooklyn. It is named after Giovanni Da Verrazzano, the first European to enter NYC harbor. At the time of its completion in 1964, it was the biggest suspension bridge in the world.

Wall Street Wall Street stands in the financial district of Manhattan, in the south of the island. It’s the home of the New York Stock Exchange. It was built in 1914 and knew the Great Depression following the crack of 1929.

Chinatown Chinatown is the Chinese district in New York City Chinatown Chinatown is the Chinese district in New York City. It’s the 2nd largest Chinatown in the USA after San Francisco. The first immigrants arrived in NYC in the 1850’s. Most of them arrived after having faced racial discrimination on the western coast.

Little Italy Little Italy is in the south of Manhattan, north of Chinatown. Italian immigration began in the late 1800’s when unemployment and poverty in Italy forced them to move. Little Italy is smaller today than it once was because of the constant expansion of Chinatown.

Harlem Harlem is the black and latino district of NYC Harlem Harlem is the black and latino district of NYC. It knew the « Harlem renaissance », an artistic movement in the 1920’s and 1930’s. But with the great depression and WWII, crime and poverty increased significantly. In the late 20th century, the city of New York led a renewal in Harlem, which mainly remains a black area today.

Greenwich Village Greenwich village is situated in lower Manhattan. Today it’s the home of the upper middle class but in the mid 20th century it was a bohemian district with painters, sculptors and dancers and in the 1950’s the capital of the beat movement.

Soho Soho was originally associated with the Arts in the 1960’S and 1970’s. But today it’s a place where people go shopping along Broadway.
