CCTV SYSTEMS CAMERA POWER SUPPLIES

CCTV SYSTEMS As mentioned before cameras operate on only two voltages. 12 volts DC 24 volts AC DVR’s do not provide power for the cameras.

CCTV SYSTEMS You can order separate power transformers for each camera or you can use a power supply system. PoE (Power over Ethernet) is available for powering cameras over UTP however it’s limitations are wattage requirements and distance. Battery packs are also an option for some camera locations.

CCTV SYSTEMS 12 Volt DC 500 Milliamp Regulated Regulated 12v 1 Amp Power Supply

CCTV SYSTEMS 12 Volt 8 Amp 16 camera power supply with each connection fused for added equipment protection. Each camera is connected to a terminal via screw terminals with LED indicators.

CCTV SYSTEMS 24 volt AC, 8.4 amp 16 Camera Power Supply designed to power 16 cameras from one central location. Each of the 16 outputs are fuse protected. Output fuses are rated @ 500mA, 115VAC 60Hz, the input fuses are rated @ 3.5 amp and each output is separately fused with LED indicators for each fuse.

CCTV SYSTEMS When connecting a camera’s power leads it should be placed in corresponding order of each camera. THE CHANNEL 1 CAMERA SHOULD BE CONNECTED TO POSITION 1 IN THE POWER SUPPLY FOR EASE OF TROUBLESHOOTING.

CCTV SYSTEMS Here is a close up of a 4 channel power supply showing the fuses and screw terminals, also visible are the knock outs for routing cables in. KNOCK OUTS

CCTV SYSTEMS Power supplies with battery backup are also available for CCTV systems.

CCTV SYSTEMS In many cases when you need the CCTV system up and running the most is when the power goes out, that is when the looters come out. A continuous duty UPS (uninterruptible power supply) charges its battery constantly and uses the battery to provide electrical current.

CCTV SYSTEMS This allows the UPS to compensate for spikes, surges and brownouts and provides clean power. The equipment continues to operate at the proper voltages and is protected from voltage spikes and surges.

CCTV SYSTEMS When using a UPS it is plugged into an outlet and the power supply will plug into the UPS, all other equipment also gets plugged into the UPS. If you have a 24VAC system with 16 cameras and the 16 power terminals are connected in parallel rated at 100 ohms at ½ an amp how many volts will each terminal provide? 24VAC………TRICK QUESTION

CCTV SYSTEMS This is a 4 port PoE switch that can be used with a 4 channel CCTV system using UTP cabling. PORT 1 ON THIS SWITCH WOULD CONNECT TO THE LAN PORT OF AN NVR OR DVR

CCTV SYSTEMS Here is a 16 port managed PoE switch that is perfect for a 16 channel CCTV system.

CCTV SYSTEMS CCTV power supplies are grounded through a technical ground which means they use the third prong of the power cord as ground. The 16 channel power supply boxes usually come with an extra fuse usually rated at 250 volts and 500mA.

CCTV SYSTEMS Its always a good idea to have extra fuses handy, especially after initially turning the system on. When servicing cameras the system should be powered down, if it can’t be powered down then the power to the camera in question should be disconnected.

CCTV SYSTEMS If running siamese type coax cable you will need the power supply adapter if there are no screw terminals on the back of the camera. These power adapters can be spliced on with dolphins crimps. POWER ADAPTER WITH SCREW TERMINALS

CCTV SYSTEMS In most instances you will use the electrical spade plugs on the 18/2 power leads when connecting them to a camera. 18/2: 18 AWG, 2 CONDUCTOR

CCTV SYSTEMS If a separate 24VAC power source is required you can use a 24VAC transformer rated at 500mA using 18AWG lamp cord.

CCTV SYSTEMS 12 volt 8 cell AA battery holders are also available for remote locations that utilize wireless cameras.

CCTV SYSTEMS The location of the CCTV equipment will need to have adequate power outlets available for all of the equipment to be plugged in. A simple 16 channel system has other power requirements: The DVR, the monitor/s, the power supply, and any other miscellaneous power supplies.

CCTV SYSTEMS CCTV installs that have long cables runs usually 1000 feet or longer may run into voltage drop problems. One way to address this problem is to step up to the next biggest wire gauge which we talked about in a previous lesson.

CCTV SYSTEMS If the cable is already in place then you have a choice, pull the cable out and run a larger gauge or…………………. What would you do to address voltage drops in a long cable run? INSTALL AN ACTIVE BALUN/AMP
