Poet: Edgar Allan Poe And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor/ Shall be lifted-- nevermore! -- Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe’s Life History   Poe's parents were touring actors  Both his parent died before he was 3 years old  he was taken into the home of John Allan  Poe study for five years in England  In 1826 he entered the University of Virginia but stayed for only a year.  Although he was a good student, but he ran up large gambling debt that he refused to pay.  Poe enlisted in the army, after he broke off his engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster.

Continued  Poe was release from the army and his appointed to West Point.  After 6 months Poe was dismissed from West Point for disobedience of orders.  His fellow cadets helped contributed the funds for the publication for Poe’s Second Edition in  Poe next took up residence in Baltimore with his widowed aunt, Maria Clemm.  In 1832 the Philadelphia Saturday Courier published five of his stories--all comic or satiric  Poe, his aunt, and Virginia moved to Richmond in  he became editor of the Southern Literary Messenger.

More on Poe’s Life  Poe married Virginia, who was not yet 14 years old.  His contributions to the Messenger were serious, analytical, and critical reviews that earned him respect as a critic.  Poe sought to establish himself as a force in literary journalism  Virginia died in January It was a heavy blow to Poe, but he continued to write and lecture.  In the summer of 1849 he revisited Richmond.  After his return north he was found unconscious on a Baltimore street.  In a brief obituary the Baltimore Clipper reported that Poe had died of "congestion of the brain."

Quote from Literary Criticism “Poe's productions show that he could see through the verse to the spirit beneath, and that he already had a feeling that all the life and grace of the one must depend on and be modulated by the will of the other.”

Poems  Alone  Ainnabe Lee  The Valley of Unrest  The lake  Serenade  The Raven  The City in the Sea  To Zante  Scenes From "Politian“  Sonnet -- To Science  The Bells  Ulalume  To Helen  A Valentine  An Enigma  To My Mother  For Annie  To F----  To Frances S. Osgood Poe’s work

Con’t  "In Youth I Have Known One“  A Pæan  To Isadore  The Village Street  The Forest Reverie  Song  Spirits Of The Dead  To ---  Eulalie  Eldorado  A Dream  To Helen  Tamerlane  A Dream Within A Dream  Israfel*  Romance  Al Aaraaf

Pieces of Work I’ve Read  The Black Cat  The Tell-Tale Heart  The Raven  The City in the Sea  Alone  Ainnabe Lee  The Valley of Unrest  The lake  The Cask of Amontillado I like Edgar Allan Poe’s writing because it is usually puts out good questions, and shows a good amount of light and dark topics. It make it easy to relate with his writing. Also his writing style is a lot like my own, which make it really easy to understand and get into the depths of his writing. I’ve always loved how Poe seemed to write, what others writers in his time would never think of writing, It made me develop respect for him.

I’m going to Mimic the Poem: Alone Together From Childhood’s hour I have been alone When others weren’t; the feeling I was not prone When others had already felt; I could not sing From the depth of my soul I could not bring My Passion; I couldn’t find My body seemed to not have the time. And all I loved, I loved him. Then--in my life, the dawn After the stormy night--him of who I was fond From the depths of his eye of love and lust The mystery of our futures glimpse in dust From his strong facial expressions, That wiped away my depression, The sun that warm our naked bodies People around us telling us it is naughty The storms hitting the earth like darts But it doesn’t compare to the storms in our hearts From the people that are not kind And the doubts they want in our minds (When everything about you is bright) Even when this day is night. I wrote a poem to the opposite theme that Poe used in Alone. Also where Poe wrote about one persons feelings. I did use the same format and rhyme scheme (aabb ccdd eeff). Also I wrote from the same point of view as Poe did. I believe it shows the same amount of light and dark in one person life. But my poem include the feelings of another person intertwined.
