Texas A&M University

 Freshman at Texas A&M University  Major in Civil Engineering  Hometown: Hutto, Texas  Most importantly, I am the loudest and proudest member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie class of 2015!!!!

 Time to make choices in your lives.  Everyone has a place. One merely has to go out and look for the university that best suits them.  The top 5 things 9 th graders need to start investigating:  Fields of interest / study  College Choices  Financial Support  Future Job (What do you want to do in life?)  SUCCESS!!!

 Civil Engineering at Texas A&M gives you EVERYTHING!  Major: Has one of the top Civil Engineering programs in the nation. *  College: Texas A&M has awesome and amazing traditions. Everyone feels like they belong.  Financial Support: Multiple scholarships are available, but you have to look for them.  Future Jobs: Engineers average higher than normal starting salaries. **  SUCCESS: Texas A&M’s mission is for their civil engineering graduates to become leaders in their profession. *** * ** ***

I have parents who are Texas A&M graduates both with engineering degrees. My parents took me to see football games, Silver Taps, Aggie Muster…etc. These events allowed me to experience the atmosphere and traditions at Texas A&M. As a result, I knew that Texas A&M University was for me. Reveille: Texas A&M’s mascot.

Civil engineers plan, design, supervise the construction, operate, maintain, inspect, retrofit, and manage many of the facilities and systems in both public and private sectors that are essential to modern life. * * Source:

 My grandfather, a former Civil Engineering professor and graduate from Texas A&M, introduced me to this field of study.  The simple things engineers design to make the quality of life more efficient intrigued me at an early age.

 Flushing of a toilet  Getting hot and cold water out of the faucet  Deciding which dirt to serve as the base of a structure.

 Civil Engineers strive to make everybody’s life more efficient.  Civil Engineers play an important role in today’s society.  Civil Engineers make a huge difference in the world.

 Competition: Proposed Hands on Activity  Everyone group into pairs of four.  Objective:  Design a tower out of only toothpicks and marsh mellows. The tallest tower that can stand ON ITS OWN for thirty seconds wins. Time: 5 minutes to build the tower

 Winner  Receives ?????????

 Excellent starting salary following graduation.  Jobs are always available and in demand.  Data from 2011 indicates that a 24.3% spike is ahead in jobs for people who design roads, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. The projected annual salary was $77,560.* * Source:

 Geotechnical Engineering- application of soil and rock mechanics principles to the analysis, design and construction of structures which are in same way related to the earth.  Geotechnical Projects: Earth dams, Landfills, Retaining Walls, Shallow Foundations, Deep Foundations, etc…  Goals:  Apply engineering principles to Earth Structures, Foundations, and subsurface facilities.  Employers:  Public  Transportation Departments  Regulatory Agencies  Army COE  Private  Design firms  Consulting firms  Utilities

 Materials Engineering- the determining of materials to use to construct or repair of structures.  Goals  Improve the durability of structures through use of materials  Improve the strength of materials with lighter and less expensive materials  Employers:  Private  Material Suppliers  Consulting firms  Test Equipment manufacturers  Material Testing Companies  Public  FHWA / FAA  Federal/State DOTS  Army Corps of Engineers  City/County Municipalities

 Structural Engineering: Design and construction of large buildings, bridges, or structures.  Requirements: Creativity, Drafting or computer aided design (CAD) skills, and a post graduate degree.  Requirements to be a recognized Professional Structural Rngineer:  A four-year degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university  2-5 year experience  No record of felonies  Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.  Pass the Profession Engineering exam.  Employers:  Consulting firms  Government contractors  Federal / State transportation Departments

 Transportation Engineering- Creating safe movement on the ground and in the air without impacting the environment.  Goals:  Evaluate failures of transportation systems  Find quick and easy evacuation routes for cities during a natural disaster.  Enhance the flow of Traffic.  Jobs: 50% governments, 40% consultants, 5% Research, and 5% trucking firms, etc…  Employers:  Public  Transportation Departments  City/County Municipalities  Private  Design firms  Consulting firms

 Ocean/Coastal Engineering- the application of basic engineering principles, to the design, construction, planning, and mangaement of projects for the ocean environment.  Structure projects (need to withstand hurricane conditions)- platforms, pipelines, ships, submarines, and robots.  Employers:  Private Industry- Offshore construction, offshore oil and gas, shipyards, dredging contractors, offshore drilling, and consulting firms.  Government- Army corp of engineers, Ports, Regulatory Agencies, Army/Navy civilian laboratories, and Texas General Land Office.  Career:  $55,000-$70,000 starting salary  Large Job Market in Texas  Sea level is rising so the need for Coastal/Ocean engineers is growing.
