Human Impact on Air Pollution Living Environment Mr. Salvatorelli Cardinal Spellman High School *All pictures courtesy of Google Images*

How have humans contributed to the destruction of ecosystems?

Have humans caused acid rain?

What happened to the ozone layer?

Causes and Effects of Air Pollution Acid Rain Caused by the release of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide from factories Effects include soil erosion, death of animals and vegetation, erosion of buildings

Causes and Effects of Air Pollution Global Warming Caused by an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere Effects include increase in earth’s temperature, bizarre weather patterns, melting of polar ice caps

Causes and Effects of Air Pollution Ozone Depletion Caused by the use of coolants and aerosol cans Effects include increased UV radiation, skin cancer and eye disorders

What Are You Going to Do? For this assignment, students will form groups of four For each slide that appears, groups will determine the type of air pollution by providing evidence to support their claims Groups will also provide ways to avoid the type of air pollution depicted

Group Responsibilities Responsibilities for the groups of four will be divided as follows: ◦One student will explain the slide ◦One student will determine the problem ◦One student will come up with a prevention method ◦One student will complete the worksheet handed out before the PowerPoint

The Public Policy Analyst (PPA) Successful completion of this assignment addresses steps 1 through 3 of the PPA: ◦1) Define the ProblemProblem ◦2) Gather the EvidenceEvidence ◦3) Identify the CausesCauses

Problem? Evidence?

Create Your Own PPA At the conclusion of the PowerPoint presentation, each group member will create his or her own Public Policy Act that our city assembly person can follow to reduce air pollution

Create Your Own PPA ALL steps of the PPA must be addressed in this assignment Students must also include an educational poster to increase air pollution awareness in our city
