Solving Two-Step Equations Algebra 1: Section 2-2 Solving Two-Step Equations

Objectives: To solve two-step equations To use deductive reasoning

Steps to Solving Two-Step Equations: Step 1: Use the addition or subtraction property of equality to get the term with a variable alone on one side of the equation. Step 2: Use the multiplication or division property of equality to write an equivalent equation in which the variable has a coefficient of 1.

Examples: 2y – 3 = 7 + 3 + 3 2y = 10 2 2 Y = 5 Check: 2(5) – 3 = 7 + 3 + 3 2y = 10 2 2 Y = 5 Check: 2(5) – 3 = 7 10 - 3 = 7 7 = 7 -x + 7 = 12 - 7 - 7 -x = 5 -1 -1 X = -5 Check: -(-5) + 7 = 12 5 + 7 = 12 12 = 12

Using Deductive Reasoning -9 – 4m = 3 +9 +9 -4m = 12 -4 -4 m = -3 Check: -9 – 4(-3) = 3 -9 + 12 = 3 3 = 3 Original equation Addition Property Addition Division Property Divide
