Defining concepts in online and open education Darco Jansen SEQUENT Consultation Session, Slovenia, 9 March2015

Perceptions on Online and Open Education Online Education Online versus Open Open Educational Resources Open Education MOOCs

Increased interest in online education Major investments of many universities in publishing course materials online. The ongoing evolution of technology also introduces emerging online support services New technology enables the possibility to teach over students at the same time in the same course. (e.g., MOOC – for Massive Open Online Course) Darco Jansen

Proposed by Allen, I.E. and Seaman. J. (2015). Grade Change: Tracking Online Education in the United States. Babson Survey Research Group and Quahog Research Group. Retrieved from Mainly the proportion of content delivered online is determining whether education may be called online or not.

But online education is much more then content In online education the learning is a result of mediated experiences that are not constrained by time and/or distance The media support in a particularly course can be applied to both course material delivery and to interaction between teachers and learners, and between learners. Online can refer to material and/or interaction and exams/tests! Darco Jansen

But what is openness? Open and online availability are frequently used: Open Source (software) Open Access (scientific output) Open Content (creative output) Open Educational Resources (OER) Open Courses (e.g., MOOCs) Open Learning Services (OLS, e.g. feedback, tutoring, meeting, communities, teamwork, examination, etc.) Darco Jansen

Course material delivery and OER Major investments of many distance and traditional universities in publishing course materials online and for free. Open Educational Resources (OER) are materials Used to support education that may be Freely accessed, reused, modified and shared by anyone. OER creators own the intellectual property and copyrights of the OER they create. However, they license the OER and make it freely available to others. Darco Jansen

Digital openness Online education versus digital openness: Free online availability. For example, Open Source (software) Open Access (scientific output) Open Content (creative output) Open Educational Resources /OER (learning materials) Open licencing (reuse – remix – rework – redistribute) Darco Jansen

But what is open education? Open universities : an open-door academic policy, i.e. no entry requirements and they are ”open” to all students. open access(ibility); freedom of time, pace and place; open programming; open to people. an approach to education that seeks to remove all unnecessary barriers to learning, while aiming to provide students with a reasonable chance of success in an education and training system centred on their specific needs and located in multiple arenas of learning. Darco Jansen

Definition MOOCs Proposal by EU-funded MOOCs projects: MOOCs are online courses designed for large numbers of participants, that can be accessed by anyone anywhere as long as they have an internet connection, are open to everyone without entry qualifications, and offer a full/complete course experience online for free Recently validated by survey “Institutional MOOC strategies in Europe”Institutional MOOC strategies in Europe Wikipedia: A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as videos, readings, and problem sets, MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build a community for students, professors, and teaching assistants

MOOCs collaboration in Europe EU launch (Sept 2013): Opening up Education. Two major goals Innovate teaching and learning for all through ICT Reshape / modernize EU education through OER (for all educational sectors and levels) EU-funded projects on MOOCs (from 2014…)
