Which country possessed the most land? United Kingdom 3. On which continent were most colonies located? Africa 4. Why would France and England (United Kingdom) want colonies in Asia? M = Militarism Description: The policy of building up strong armed forces and an overall glorification of the military.

Countries built up strong armies to defend themselves and their new colonies. Tension increased as countries watched their neighbors build up their military.

A = Alliances Description: An alliance is an agreement between nations to help and support one another in war.

Countries joined together in alliances with other countries for protection. If one country was attacked, the others were obligated to help.
