Hunger & Poverty

What is Hunger?  “Hunger is a term which has three meanings (Oxford English Dictionary 1971)  the uneasy or painful sensation caused by want of food; craving appetite. Also the exhausted condition caused by want of food  the want or scarcity of food in a country  a strong desire or craving”

What is WORLD Hunger?  “The related technical term (in this case operationalized in medicine)is either malnutrition, or, if malnutrition is taken to refer to both undernutrition and overnutrition (obesity, overweight) as it increasingly is, undernutrition. Both malnutrition and undernutrition refer to the effects on people of not having enough food. “

Church View: Hunger  “For I was hungry and you gave me food.” Matthew 25:35  The Church believes that we must feed those who are hungry.

Hunger and Poverty  “Poverty is the principal cause of hunger. The causes of poverty include poor people's lack of resources, an extremely unequal income distribution in the world and within specific countries, conflict, and hunger itself.”  “As of 2015 (2011 statistics), the World Bank has estimated that there were just over 1 billion poor people in developing countries who live on $1.25 a day or less.”

Other Causes  Harmful Economic Systems  Conflict  World Population  Food and Agricultural Policy  Climate Change (shift in crops that can be grown and thus, farming practices)

What is being done?  There are many organizations that are dedicated to solving the issue of world hunger  A few examples are:  Bread for the World - urging nation’s leaders to end hunger  The Hunger Project - Our Mission: To end hunger and poverty by pioneering sustainable, grassroots, women- centered strategies and advocating for their widespread adoption in countries throughout the world.

Fighting Hunger and Poverty. Together we can Change It.  YvwB8Oc0 YvwB8Oc0

Best Possible Solution?  The best possible solution is to teach those who do not know how to obtain food hunting and agricultural techniques.  Organizations are already working to end hunger and help those who need to find a continuous source of food, though most just focus on giving food for the moment.

Fair Trade

What is Fair Trade?  “A social movement whose stated goal is to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions and to promote sustainability.”  “From far-away farms to your shopping cart, products that bear our logo come from farmers and workers who are justly compensated.”- fairtradeusa.org

Fair Trade: Improving Lives  HDxv4B4 HDxv4B4

Where do Fair Trade Products Come From?  “Fair Trade Certified™ products come from cooperatives, independent small farmers, and farm workers in 70 developing countries across Africa, Asia, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean. Nearly 12,000 products bearing the black and green Fair Trade Certified label are sourced from these farming communities, and can be found in more than 100,000 retail locations across North America.”

Fair Trade and the Church  The Catholic Church, along with other branches of Christianity, is very active in the Fair Trade movement.  The Christian community organizes events for Fair Trade and purchases many Fair Trade products.  Fair Trade is used as a possible and probable solution for hunger and poverty.

Our Opinions  We believe that hunger and poverty should not be tolerated and that everyone should look for a solution to these problems.  We think that Fair Trade is a good solution if people become dedicated to its success.

Debate  Do you think it is more productive to give people a means to produce their own food or to just give them food?  Do you think anyone would be against Fair Trade? If so, why?  Do you think that there is a surefire way to end hunger and poverty? If so, what is the idea?

Prayer Service

That We May Be Satisfied Generous God, Enough is enough! Or is it? Your love and care are extended way beyond our deserving, Way beyond our capacity to collect. You provide us more than enough… But Lord, so much of life disclaims that enoughness. We hope for more than we need. We work for more than we can obtain. We demand more than we have earned. We expect more than our share. At the same time we hear story upon story of people Truly lacking the enough we consider so basic to our lives… Too many millions of children lack the basic nutrients With which to build strong bodies, As famine and adult power struggles strip their pantries bare… God, we do affirm your enoughness. Please, now, bestow on those so lacking: The home, the food, and the peace they need truly to have enough. And help us who enjoy a super-abundance To turn our longing for more into a mission to simplify, to share, And to follow your lead, that is, to give. In the name of the one who gave himself, even Christ Jesus our Lord, we pray. Amen.

Matthew 25:  “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’”

Petitions  For those in our world who do not get enough food to eat or water to drink…We pray to the Lord. (Lord, hear our prayer)  For those stricken with poverty, that they may find comfort in God… We pray to the Lord. (Lord, hear our prayer)  For those who are not getting paid fairly for their labor, that they find a way to support themselves… We pray to the Lord. (Lord, hear our prayer)

Prayer of the Refugee Rise Against  SQGOYOjxs SQGOYOjxs

Creator God, You loved the world into life. Forgive us when our dreams of the future are shaped by anything other than glimpses of a kingdom of justice, peace and an end to poverty. Amen.
