Programming Update

Malaria Programs: Best Practices The programs we support

For more details: Ask Rebecca!

The Four Pillars… in other country programs 1.Institutional Capacity Building 2.Malaria prevention, control and management 3.Treatment 4.Sustainable Livelihood The Four Pillars

Education

Education (in 2013) In Malawi, malaria awareness activities reached 25,000 people In Uganda, 41,000 people learned about malaria prevention and control In Tanzania, 14,000 people were sensitized about malaria prevention and control

Abel Makungwe Prevention

Remove areas of standing water

Prevention Nets distributed in 2013: 1,888 in Malawi 2,738 in Nigeria 2,950 in Zambia 9,366 in Uganda

This has reduced the number of malaria cases in our village. Now my son will never go to sleep until he is covered with a mosquito net.” ~ A mother in Zambia “Before the malaria program started, people only slept under the nets during rainy seasons when mosquitoes are plenty. But now we all sleep under the nets throughout the year…

Diagnosis

Diagnosis and Treatment (in 2013) In Uganda, more than 42,000 people were tested for malaria; 16,000 tested positive and received medication In Malawi, 55,660 test kits and 186,000 packets of malaria medication were delivered to clinics Because of prompt treatment, Martinho Lutero Clinic in Munene, Mozambique reported no deaths from malaria in children under five!

Treatment

“Because of the malaria program, we now have trained community workers, rapid diagnostic tests and anti-malarial medicines in our village; we treat malaria with the first-line medicines provided by the program.” ~ An Elder in Zambia

Sustainable Livelihoods

“In the past before I had my small business, there was a frequent prevalence of malaria in this house. Then I got a loan from the Village Savings and Loan Association. I used the money to start a small business baking donuts and cakes. I bought another mosquito net as soon as I could. “Knowing about the problems of malaria and also being protected [by our nets] made quite a difference. Although we still suffer from malaria sometimes, there is a big difference in our lives. Now the malaria program has come to us and added development to our lives. I feel I can see a good future, as the program of malaria continues.” - Maria, Chigumukire, Malawi

Sustainable Livelihoods In Malawi alone, VSLA’s have mobilized more than $88,000 USD to help communities and households become financially stable.

- Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

“Since the malaria project started in 2011, the changes have been quite tremendous and significant. We have had a great reduction of malaria in the under-5 children. The malaria campaign is doing wonders. It’s like a miracle; so many lives are being saved!” - Judith Jere, Program Coordinator in Malawi
