Mission The ContainR Project is a pilot project intended to provide affordable sustainable spaces for use by artists and cultural organizations, using recycled shipping containers as building components.

The ContainR Pavilion

ContainR - Building Solutions Artistic Advancement This temporary facility will complement Arts Court, enhancing its programming and providing much needed educational, exhibition, performance and meeting space to its tenants and the local community The second floor will be designed as a model Artists-in-Residence suite

ContainR - Building Solutions Educational Opportunities In addition to being a destination site for school environmental curriculum, the Pavilion will involve engineering, architecture and design faculties at post-secondary institutions and trade schools The project will contribute to the discourse on and practical applications of alternative building designs

ContainR - Building Solutions Environmental Efficiency This “green” project will utilize innovative, environmentally responsible building techniques, materials and systems The shipping containers as main building components will be indicative of the recycling focus of the entire project

Container Buildings In the last decade globalization has provided us with one of the most exciting and accessible building blocks. North American trade deficits have created an excess of used shipping containers that, until now, served no function. Every year, 10 per cent of the world's 65 million steel shipping containers are taken out of circulation and earmarked for recycling.

Container Buildings In recent years, shipping containers have been used to create temporary, emergency and disaster housing in Africa and Jamaica. Containers have become schools in Scotland and California. The steel structures are used as artists’ studios and galleries in Europe. In South Africa a hostel was built from the metal boxes, and a traveling exhibition in the U.S. is housed in a container-built museum. This project presents Ottawa with the opportunity to build its own creative landmark.
