Purpose To define words that identify heroic traits To practice multiple strategies of definition

Qualities of a Hero Using a bubble map, brainstorm as many adjectives as you can that describe a heroic person. In small groups, compare and share your maps. Add words to your list that you do not already have. Using a thesaurus or iPod, expand your lists by finding synonyms or other appropriate words. After step 3, pass out eight index cards to each group. Ask the group to select eight words and write them on the index cards to use a manipulatives. Direct students to do an open sort in which they choose categories and sort their words. After students have discussed and sorted their words, all groups to share their ideas. As a class, select categories and create a word wall.

Strategies of Definition Paragraphs using the function strategy demonstrate how the concept functions or operates in the real world. Paragraphs using the example strategy use examples to help the reader understand your definition. Paragraphs using the negation strategy explain what something is by showing what it is not. Using negation helps to contrast your definition with other’s definitions.
