Electroplating Nicole Porreca

Electroplating- The processed used to cover zinc with copper in making coinage involves using direct-current (DC) electricity, which causes redox reactions to occur between the metal and non- metal solutions. works.html

Plating Process Electroplating needs a power source, like a battery or power supply. The power puts electrons where the reduction occurs, or cathode. The main source of electrons any electrochemical process in the anode. The anode is usually made with the metal to be plated. The cations in the metal are reduced, removed, and put on the object attached to the cathrode. The metal ions at the anode are then oxidized and dissolve into the plating solution.  This picture shows on of the processes in electroplating. plating.jpg

Plating bonds to the surface with a metallic bond on most of the material’s surface. This is convenient because the finish is attached on to the object. This car has a coating on top of it, using electroplating to protect the outside from weathering and other harmful things. 

Electroplating is used in order to protect the object from corrosion, water, and other substances that could harm the object. process.blogspot.com/

Examples:  The copper coating on the penny www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_  approve/2..  The metal coating on a bike uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/oap/images/atlas%  20bike.gif  The coating on a car franciwww.sftravel.com/images/limousines/san- franci... 

Uses for electroplating:  To seal cans for food _electroplating  Creating alloys  Making hollow gold jewelry

Discussion Questions: 1.What is the definition of electroplating? 2.In order to electroplate, what is needed for the process to work?
