Ancient Indian Sickness Leprosy Mental sickness Tuberculosis (TB) Supernatural causes Cold A sickness in Ancient India was leprosy. Leprosy is a skin condition where your skin becomes thick, and skin lesion happens. The Indians believed that mental sickness was caused by a bad diet; disrespecting the gods, teachers, or other people; and shock because of great fear or happiness. Tuberculosis, otherwise known as TB, was a disease in Ancient India that they thought to be attributed with excessive fatigue, worries, hunger, pregnancy and chest wounds. The ancient Indians believed that sickness overall was caused by supernatural agents, witchcraft, demons, or will of the gods. The ancient Indians had the common cold, too, just like we do.

Modern U.S. Sickness Leprosy Cold Seasonal Allergies Mental sickness Tuberculosis (TB) One modern US sickness is leprosy. Leprosy, a skin condition of which the skin thickens and spreads into lesions, we now know is caused by mycobacterium leprae and mycobacterium lepromatosis. Some other modern U.S. sicknesses are the flu, caused by the influenza virus, the stomach bug, a sickness caused by a virus that spreads through food contamination, the common cold, and seasonal allergies. Most people think allergies are caused by pollen air, but now we know that allergies happen when your immune system mistakes innocuous allergens for a threat and attacks them, causing an allergic reaction. Mental disorders or illnesses are a sickness of the brain. Some mental illnesses include anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, and adjustment disorders. Tuberculosis is a disease known in the U.S. to be caused by various strains of mycobacteria, usually Mycobacterium tuberculosis.Tuberculosis can be fatal if left untreated.

Compare/Contrast- Sickness Modern Day U.S. Ancient India supernatural causes leprosy mental illnesses tuberculosis cold allergies A conclusion that we can make from this diagram is that almost every fatal disease people had in Ancient India, is now, in modern US is now treatable. For example, leprosy, mental illnesses, tuberculosis, and the common cold are treatable, but in Ancient India there were fatal, and death was common. In Ancient India, people believed sickness was caused by supernatural agents, witchcraft, demons, or will of the gods. Which we do not. In Modern Day U.S., we have common allergies. In both Ancient India and Modern Day U.S., there is leprosy, which was fatal in Ancient India but is now treatable, mental illnesses, tuberculosis, which, again, was fatal but is now treatable and deaths are rare, and the common cold. If not for Ayurveda though, we might not have developed thetools for cure soon enough.

Ancient Indian Cures/Preventions They studied dead bodies They were told to stay healthy They had textbooks with cures Leeches sucked blood Prevention Ayurveda Acupuncture Herbal Remedies 1: Doctors in Ancient India studied dead bodies to cure different sickness 2: To stay healthy and prevent sickness, doctors in Ancient India the told the people to eat well, keep clean, and to get fresh air. 3: The ancient Indians had different textbooks with cures, ailments, and thoughts about diseases based on Ayurveda 6: Leeches were often placed on people’s sick bodies because they believed if “infected” blood should be taken from the body, it would heal humans, and only the good blood would stay behind 5: The Ancient Indians believed that prevention was the best cure for any sickness 7:Acupuncture was a common type of ailment used to cure diseases. Multiple needles were inserted into the body for this cure. 8:In the writing of Ayurveda, there were thoughts of ailments, cures, prevention, and ideas about sicknesses. Ayurveda was 4: Ancient Indians used many herbal remedy medicines to cure different illnesses

Modern U.S. Cures/Prevention Allergy cures; EpiPen® Tuberculosis (TB) Leprosy Immunization Acupuncture Herbal Remedies Autopsy Ayurveda Stay Healthy 1: EpiPen® Auto-Injectors have one dose of epinephrine, which you inject into your outer thigh to get rid of allergies. 2: If a treatment for the disease Tuberculosis or TB is completed, deaths are rare, and most do not need to be hospitalized during treatment. Most people are treated with antibiotics. 3: Leprosy in the U.S. can be cured and treated by Rifampicin, Dapsone, and Thalidomide. 4: Diseases such as smallpox, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), and polio have been reduced or even eliminated with the help of vaccines and immunization. Shots are a form of immunization of the which doctors give you a small dose of a disease so you are immune to it. 5: We do acupuncture which is the insertion of needles mostly in the back to treat diseases and relieve pain 6: Today we use herbal remedies to make medicine such as opium, aspirin, digitalis, and quinine. 7: An autopsy is the study of a deceased body by scientists to find the cause of death of him or her, or in some cases, to study the disease that killed them like the Indians did. 8: Ayurveda is a system of medicine the Ancient Indians created. In it they described ideas of ailments, cures, diagnosis, diseases, and their symptoms.s 9: Many doctors today tell us to stay healthy by eating the right foods, staying fit, and by practicing good hygene.

Compare/Contrast- Cures/Prevention Mode r n U.S. -Acupuncture -Study dead bodies -Herbal Remedies -Ayurveda -Stay Healthy Ancient India -Allergy Cures: EpiPen -Immunization and shots -Antibiotics-Tuberculosis cures -No Tuberculosis cure -Their cures were written in textbooks -Leeches sucked blood -Prevention The conclusion that we can make from this diagram is that most things they had, we still have today, but we have progressed the use of medicine. Also, we have figured out that not every remedy they used was safe. Back then they studied dead bodies, and we do too, only it is mostly for the cause of death, not to find ways to prevent diseases. We use something called an autopsy. In India there was no cure for Tuberculosis, and it was quite fatal, but now deaths are rare with the treatment of antibiotics. We both use herbal remedies to create and modify our medicines. Immunization and shots are used today but were not created in AI. In Ancient India they were told to stay healthy, get fresh air, and keep clean. We are told very sismilar things to stay healthy today. AIs they believed that prevention was the best cure. Ayurveda is still used today, even though the first ideas of it were written thousands of years ago. Ideas of acupuncture, plants, animals, remedies, and much more are still used today. The conclusion we made is that most types of medicine they had in Ancient India, we have changed to better the use, but we have also learned that not every medicinal remedy works. For example, we now know that puttiong leeches on your body is not a safe remedy because it takes blood away which slows down the flow of blood to your heart, and actually decreases the chances of living. We have now learned to use leeches in a more efficient matter. We do not use it to draw

Ancient India -How Medicine Was Made Plants Animals Minerals Herbs Ayurveda Needles Indian doctors highly relied on plants to make medicine. Animals were also used often, as were minerals and herbs. These mixtures of materials helped create Ayurveda. Ayurveda was a system of medicine the Ancient Indians used. Ayurveda is based on ideas about ailments and diseases, their symptoms, diagnosis and cure. Acupuncture, a type of medicine, required needles as a material to function.

Modern U.S. -How Medicine IS Made Made by machine We still use plants, animals etc. Chemical process Must be intensely tested We make our medicine by machine and chemicals, but we still use some plants and animals. Doctors work for months and even years on finding the perfect way to make medicine, but before the doctors test the medicine on people they test it many times in their lab to make sure it’s okay to use on them. This process could take 2-3 years to fully accomplish.

Compare/Contrast -How Medicine Was Made Ancient India Modern U.S. -Animal Sacrifices Use -Plants -Herbs -Minerals -Animals -Intensely tested -Made by machine -Chemical process A conclusion we can draw are that plants, herbs, minerals, and animals are very important to medical history and without them we probably would not be here and there would be a lot less people in our world. In Ancient India they had animal sacrifices to make medicine. In Modern Day US we have to intensely test our medicine before we can even try it on a person, it is made by machine in most cases, and is a chemical process.

Conclusions Ancient India and Modern U.S. are interdependent because many ideas about cures, ailments, medicine, and illnesses have been taken from India and adapted into what they are today. Without all of Ancient India’s contributions to medicine, we wouldn’t have advanced as far as we have in the Modern United States. For example,
