Launched in March 2006 Standards within the NSF Meetings and Regional meetings held Progressed over last 12 months National Service Framework for Older People

Standard 1 – rooting out age discrimination Standard 2 – person centred care Standard 3 – the promotion of health and wellbeing Standard 4 – challenging dependency Standard 5 – intermediate care Standard 6 – hospital care Standard 7 – stroke Standard 8 – falls and fractures Standard 9 – mental health of older people Standard 10 – medicines in older people Supporting standard – Workforce development National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 1 – rooting out age discrimination One of the elements of this standard is that health and social care services are provided regardless of age The underpinning basis for this standard is clinical and social need National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 2 in the NSF is person centred care This is built on a foundation of health and social care services treating people as individuals Key here is enabling people to make choices about their own care Integrated commissioning arrangements across health & social care is one of the ways in which choice for people may be maximised National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 3 in the NSF is promotion of health and well being for older people Here the physical health, emotional health and well being of people over 50 is promoted through partnership working With the aim of extending healthy life expectancy and quality of life. Very holistic standard National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard four is challenging dependency Which includes the availability of range of enabling, community based services that are effective Very important but key is to ensure that community based services are available in which dignity in care for individuals is a core element National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard five is a standard about intermediate care Central to this is to enable older people to maintain their health, independence and home life The home life element is important and carries opportunities for service delivery to be implemented in community settings National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 6 of the NSF is hospital Care So that if admission to hospital is necessary for older people, the care they receive is co-ordinated, efficient and effective in meeting their clinical and non-clinical needs Which raises the question about what we mean by non-clinical needs National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 7 covers stroke And one of the aspects of this includes co-ordinated longer term services, support and advice So again, there are opportunities for dignity in care to be a central consideration within the stroke standard Repeated reference due to Dignity in Care having a National Co-ordinating Group National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 8 on the NSF is falls and fractures Which includes the prevention of falls and osteoporosis Another element is that older people who have fallen receive effective treatment and rehabilitation So this is a broad standard covering all aspects National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 9 is mental health in older people Mental health problems can severely affect the independence and quality of life of individuals and their families So one of the elements of this standard is the planning of services to ensure timely and appropriate assessment National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

Standard 10 of the NSF is medicines and older people It seeks to ensures that older people are enabled to gain maximum benefit from medication to maintain or increase their quality and duration of life Again enabling is a key consideration and links strongly to the dignity in care agenda National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)

The NSF also has supporting standards such as workforce development Workforce development is particularly important and Care Council for Wales have convened a network which produce a report which included scoping out all pertinent strategies National Service Framework for Older People (cont.)
