Introduction to Sports Physiology Mr. Weakley

Sports Science  Sports science is a discipline that studies how the healthy human body works during exercise, and how sport and physical activity, promote health from cellular to whole body perspectives. The study of sport science traditionally incorporates areas of Physiology, Psychology, Anatomy, Biomechanics, and Biochemistry.

Definitions  What is Sport- An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or other for entertainment  What is Physiology- The way in which a living organisms bodily parts function.

Definitions What is Physical Activity? Body movement produced by muscle action that increases energy expenditure. eg: activities of daily living such as shopping and work related activities. What is Exercise? Planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful physical activity e.g.: training for or performing athletics, sports, or recreational activities such as jogging, roller-blading, ice skating, swimming, etc.

Definition of Sports Physiology  Sports physiology is the study of the long and short-term effects of training and conditions on athletes.  It’s a specialized field of study that goes hand in hand with human anatomy  Anatomy = Structure of the body  Physiology = Function of the body
