CIS 101: Introduction to Computers Discovering Computers 2010 Use the Slide Show view

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What Is Input? What is input?  Input device is any hardware component used to enter data or instructions  Data or instructions entered into memory of computer

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What Is Input? What are the two types of input?  Raw unprocessed text, numbers, images, audio, and video  Instructions  Programs  Commands  User responses  Data A program is a series of related instructions that tells a computer what tasks to perform and how to perform them Programs respond to commands that a user issues A user response is an instruction a user issues by replying to a question displayed by a program

What Are Input Devices An input device is any hardware component that allows users to enter data and instructions into a computer

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS How is the keyboard divided?  Typing area  Numeric keypad  Function keys, special keys that issue commands The keyboard is the most common input device on computers.

Types of Keyboards USB port Keyboard port Wired Keyboards Bluetooth IrDA Wireless Keyboards

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS The Keyboard What is the insertion point? pointer insertion point  Blinking vertical bar that indicates where next character you type will display  Pointer changes location and shape as you move mouse or other pointing device  Block arrow  Pointing hand

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS The Keyboard What is an ergonomic keyboard?  Designed to minimize strain on hands and wrists  Ergonomics incorporates comfort, efficiency, and safety into design of items in workplace; user friendly devices

Pointing Devices

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a mouse?  A pointing device that fits under palm of hand  Pointing device controls movement of pointer, also called mouse pointer  A mouse can be wired or wireless  An optical mouse senses light to detect mouse’s movement

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a trackball?  Stationary pointing device with a ball on its top  To move pointer, rotate ball with thumb, fingers, or palm of hand

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a touchpad or touch screen?  A monitor or small, flat, rectangular surface sensitive to pressure and motion

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a pointing stick?  A pointing device shaped like pencil eraser positioned between keys on keyboard

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS Types of game controllers  Joystick is vertical lever mounted on a base  Wheel is steering-wheel-type input device  Pedal simulates car brakes and accelerator

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is pen input? With pen input, you touch a stylus or digital pen on a flat surface to write, draw, or make selections

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is Voice Input? Voice input is the process of entering data by speaking into a microphone Voice recognition is the computer’s capability of distinguishing spoken words

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a MIDI input? Audio input from a musical instrument (musical instrument digital interface).  External device, such as electronic piano keyboard, to input music and sound effects

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a portable keyboard? An input devices for mobile users  Full-sized keyboard you conveniently attach to and remove from PDA

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a docking station?  External device that holds mobile computer  Provides connections to peripherals

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a digital camera?  Allows you to take digital pictures  Images viewable immediately on camera Categories of camerasField camerasPoint-and-shoot cameraStudio cameras

Two factors affect the quality of digital camera photos: Resolution is the number of horizontal and vertical pictures in a display device A pixel is the smallest element in an electronic display Resolution Each pixel consists of one or more bits of data The more bits used to represent a pixel, the more colors and shades of gray that can be represented Number of bits stored in each pixel  Pixel (picture element) is single point in electronic image  Greater the number of pixels, the better the image quality

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS Like Consumer Reports, cnet reviews cameras, TVs, computers etc. Click to check out cnet. cnet

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is video input?  The process of entering full-motion mages into computer  Video capture card is adapter card that converts analog video signal into digital signal that computer can use  Digital video (DV) camera records video as digital signals

Video Input Video: Video Editing on Your Computer CLICK TO START

What is a Web cam? A digital video camera that displays its output on a Web page, it can: Capture video and still images Send messages with video attachments Add live images to instant messages Broadcast live images over the Internet Make video telephone calls

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is videoconferencing?  Whiteboard is another window on screen that can display notes and drawings simultaneously on all participants’ screens  Two or more geographically separated people who use a network or the Internet to transmit audio and video data

What is a scanner? Flatbed Pen or Handheld Sheet-fed Drum  Light-sensing device that reads printed text and graphics  Used for image processing, converting paper documents into electronic images

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is an optical reader? Next  Optical character recognition (OCR) reads characters & translates them into ASCII (bytes) characters  Optical mark recognition (OMR) reads hand-drawn pencil marks, such as small circles  Bar code scanner  A device that uses light source to read characters, marks, and codes and then converts them into digital data

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a turnaround document?  Document that you return to the company that sent it  Portion you return has information printed in OCR characters

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a bar code scanner?  Uses laser beams to read bar codes

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a bar code?  Identification code that consists of a set of vertical lines and spaces of different widths  Universal Product Code (UPC)

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a magnetic-ink character recognition (MICR) reader?  Can read text printed with magnetized ink  Banking industry almost exclusively uses MICR for check processing

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS Other Input Devices What is an RFID reader?  Reads information on the tag via radio waves  Can be handheld devices or mounted in a stationary object

What is a Magnetic stripe card readers? Devices that read the magnetic stripe on the back of cards such as: Credit cardsEntertainment cardsBank cardsOther similar cards

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a data collection device?  Obtains data directly at location where transaction or event takes place  Warehouses; outdoors; remote areas  Transmits (uploads) data over a network or Internet; wired or wireless

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is a point of sale (POS) terminal?  Records purchases, processes credit or debit cards, and updates inventory  Swipe credit or debit card through card reader c — c reads customer’s personal data from magnetic strip

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS Terminals What is an automatic teller machine (ATM)?  Self-service banking machine that connects to host computer through network ATM crime

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What is biometrics?  Authenticates person’s identity by verifying personal characteristic  Fingerprint scanner captures curves and indentations of fingerprint  Hand geometry system measures shape and size of person’s hand

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS More examples of biometric technology  Voice verification system compares live speech with stored voice pattern  Signature verification system recognizes shape of signature  Iris recognition system reads patterns in blood vessels in back of eye  Biometric data is sometimes stored on smart card, which stores personal data on microprocessor embedded in card

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS Biometrics

Levi Krein Associate Professor, CIS What input devices are available for those with physical limitations?  Keyguard allows users to rest hands on keyboard without accidentally pressing keys  Head-mounted pointer controls pointer on screen  New developments include gesture recognition and computerized implant devices
