LESSON 46: The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ

PURPOSE To teach the children that the Book of Mormon is a second witness of Jesus Christ.

Away in a Manger 1. Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head; The stars in the heavens looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. 2. The cattle are lowing, the poor baby wakes; But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh. 3. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there. * Asleep, asleep, asleep, the Savior in a stall! [2nd part] Asleep, asleep, Asleep, asleep, asleep, the Lord of all. [2nd part] asleep, asleep, asleep, the Lord, the Lord of all. Words: attr. to Martin Luther, 1483–1546 Music: Charles H. Gabriel, 1856–1932

The New Testament records the birth of Jesus in Jerusalem. The Book of Mormon is a second written witness of Jesus Christ and tells what happened in the Americas when he was born.

1 Nephi 10:4  4 Yea, even asix hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem, a bprophet would the Lord God raise up among the cJews—even a dMessiah, or, in other words, a Savior of the world. Lehi (600 B.C.)

Mosiah 3:5; 5 For behold, the time cometh, and is not far distant, that with power, the aLord bOmnipotent who creigneth, who was, and is from all deternity to all eternity, shall come down from heaven among the children of men, and shall dwell in a etabernacle of clay, and shall go forth amongst men, working mighty fmiracles, such as healing the sick, raising the dead, causing the lame to walk, the gblind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear, and curing all manner of diseases. King Benjamin (124 B.C.)

Alma 7:10;  10 And behold, he shall be aborn of Mary, at bJerusalem which is the cland of our forefathers, she being a dvirgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and econceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God. Alma (83 B.C.)

Samuel the Lamanite (6 B.C.) 2 And behold, he said unto them: Behold, I give unto you a sign; for afive years more cometh, and behold, then cometh the Son of God to redeem all those who shall believe on his name. Samuel the Lamanite (6 B.C.)

What signs of Jesus Christ’s birth were given in Bethlehem What signs of Jesus Christ’s birth were given in Bethlehem? (Luke 2:6–14; Matthew 2:1–2.) Which sign was seen in Bethlehem and in America? (3 Nephi 1:21.) What were the other signs given in America? (3 Nephi 1:15, 19.)

LESSON 46: The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ

In Today’s Lesson we will be jumping thru time and scriptures, using both the Book of Mormon and the Bible. We will be discussing the foretelling of our Savior’s birth and the events that happened around it. It is important to have two scriptural witnesses of the birth and mission of Jesus Christ, so we can receive more of the word of God and be a witness to the truth of what is said.

DISCUSSION TIME

Six hundred years before the Savior’s birth, what did Nephi say the name of the Son of God would be? (2 Nephi 25:19.) What did Nephi and Isaiah prophesy about the Savior’s mother? (1 Nephi 11:13, 18; Isaiah 7:14.) What did Alma prophesy would be the name of the mother of the Son of God? (Alma 7:10.)

Who was Jesus’ Father? (Luke 1:35). Heavenly Father Who was Joseph? Joseph was Mary’s husband. Even though Heavenly Father was the Father of both Jesus Christ’s body and spirit, Joseph took care of Jesus and raised him as a father would raise a son.) Just before the birth of Jesus, what did the angel tell Joseph to name the baby? (Matthew 1:21.)

What signs did Samuel the Lamanite give about the birth of Jesus What signs did Samuel the Lamanite give about the birth of Jesus? (Helaman 14:2–5.) What signs were given in Jerusalem? (Luke 2:8, 10–12; Matthew 2:1–2, 9–10.)

Why is it important that we have two scriptural witnesses of the birth and mission of Jesus Christ? (2 Nephi 29:8.)

Why did Heavenly Father send his Son, Jesus Christ, to earth Why did Heavenly Father send his Son, Jesus Christ, to earth? (2 Nephi 9:21–22; 3 Nephi 27:13–14; John 3:16)

How does Heavenly Father want us to show our gratitude for Jesus Christ? (Alma 7:23–24.)

Luke 2:6–14 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her afirstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the binn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the aglory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you agood tidings of great bjoy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is aborn this day in the city of David a bSaviour, which is Christ the cLord. 12 And this shall be a asign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 aGlory to God in the highest, and on earth bpeace, good will toward men. 3 Nephi 1:15, 19 15 And it came to pass that the words which came unto Nephi were fulfilled, according as they had been spoken; for behold, at the going down of the asun there was bno darkness; and the people began to be astonished because there was no darkness when the night came. 19 And it came to pass that there was no darkness in all that night, but it was as light as though it was mid–day. And it came to pass that the sun did rise in the morning again, according to its proper order; and they knew that it was the day that the Lord should be aborn, because of the bsign which had been given.
