God Begins the Story June 2

Remember When? What was a time when your plans failed to live up to your intent? Some of those failed plans we could fix, some we could not  Today we look at God’s original plan in designing men and women. We want to discover how God fixed sin’s destruction

Listen for evidence of God’s eternality and His omnipotence. Genesis 1:1 (NIV) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. … [26] Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air,

Listen for evidence of God’s eternality and His omnipotence. over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." [27] So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

God Creates Use your imagination … how do you think it looked when God created something out of nothing? Consider that very first verse … how does accepting that statement as fact impact how you view life and the world? What do you learn about God’s creation of man from this passage? Remember that people “create” with preexisting materials or thoughts. God began with nothing.

God Creates What do you think it means to be created “in the image of God?” What evidence do you see in this passage that God places high value on us? How can you celebrate the blessing of being made in God’s image?

God Creates Here we are, we’re alone in the universe, there’s no God, it just seems that it all began a something as simple as sunlight striking on a piece of rock. And here we are. We’ve only got ourselves. Somehow, we’ve just got to make a go of it. We’ve only got ourselves. Consider this quote by John Osbourne, an English playwright How would you respond to his statement?

Listen for the role of personal choice in Adam and Eve’s actions. Genesis 2:15-17 (NIV) The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. [16] And the Lord God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; [17] but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." … 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit

Listen for the role of personal choice in Adam and Eve’s actions. of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. [7] Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Humanity Rebels What freedoms did God give Adam and Eve? How are God’s restrictions actually indications of His blessings? What happened when Adam and Eve disobeyed and ate the forbidden fruit? Why do you think are we attracted to do what God has forbidden?

Humanity Rebels What people, situations, fears, pressures prompt a person to rebel against God today? Why do we pick and choose which of God’s commands to obey? How can believers protect themselves from Satan’s deception and confusion?

Listen for God’s promise. Genesis 3:14-19 (NIV) So the Lord God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. [15] And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." [16] To the woman he said,

Listen for God’s promise. "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." [17] To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.

Listen for God’s promise. [18] It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. [19] By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." Genesis 3:23-24 (NIV) So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden

Listen for God’s promise. to work the ground from which he had been taken. [24] After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Sin Has Consequences How did God punish the man and the woman? Adam and Eve in the garden (then thrown out) experienced consequences as they chose to sin. What consequences of sin do people experience when they choose to sin? The Man The Woman

Sin Has Consequences Agree or disagree? What can believers do to help people understand that sin has consequences? Yes, and be angry at people who are getting away with their sin! Be happy when people suffer consequences of their sin. Agree Disagree

Application All things have their beginning in the powerful word and creative execution of the eternal, almighty creator God. God’s creation had purpose … was according to a plan … it focused on His promise. Think about how you might respond to someone who echo’s John Osborne’s statement, “Here we are, we’re alone in the universe, there’s no God …”

Application God’s plan for humankind indicates His call to serve and the freedom to enjoy His provision … all within the boundary of His Word The wrong in this world and in humankind is the result of our rebellion against what God has told us. God warns us of the consequences of disobedience. The decision to obey or disobey is ours. Tell God you want to make the right decisions every day – trust in His power to do so-

Application Sinful actions have their consequences It alienates our relationship with others and with the Lord Sin brings God’s judgment and leads to death. Thank the Lord for His redemption from sin’s penalty and sin’s power in your life. Look for opportunities to share that reality with someone this week.
