Solar System Scale Activity 6 th Grade Science

Place a piece of paper on your desk in front of you vertically. In very small letters, write “ Sun ” on the very top edge of the strip. Note: Use small print and do NOT use circles to represent objects! Vertical looks like thisWrite SUN on top edge

On the bottom edge of the same strip write “Pluto” Note: Use small print and do NOT use circles to represent objects! Write Pluto on bottom of strip

Fold the strip in half (top to bottom) and open it up again, showing the crease.

What other astronomical objects make up the solar system? What object in the Solar System might belong on the crease?

Write what you think goes on the crease between the Sun and Pluto.

Write the rest of the planets on the strip of paper. Make sure you put the planets in order and relative locations where you think they should be.

Now write DRAFT on this side of the paper.

Let’s see how you did! Turn your strip of paper over and let’s make an answer key.

Place the piece of paper on your desk in front of you vertically. In very small letters, write “ Sun ” on the very top edge of the strip and then write “Pluto” on the very bottom of the strip.

REFOLD paper strip halfway between the Sun and Pluto and then open it back up. On the crease, write…..(drumroll please) URANUS

Fold Pluto to Uranus On the crease write…….(drum roll please) NEPTUNE

Fold Sun to Uranus On the crease write…….(drum roll please) SATURN

Fold Sun to Saturn On the crease write…….(drum roll please) JUPITER

Fold Sun to Jupiter On the crease write…….(drum roll please) ASTEROID BELT

Fold Sun to Asteroid Belt On the crease write…….(drum roll please) MARS

Fold Sun to Mars On the crease write…….(drum roll please) VENUS

Shoot for the stars and guess what you think you should write between the Sun and Venus??? MERCURY

Which planet is MISSING? EARTH Write Earth between Venus and Mars
