What are types of nonrenewable energies?

Nonrenewable Energy Main Types of Nonrenewable Energy 1. Coal 2. Crude Oil 3. Natural Gas 4. Nuclear Energy Fossil Fuel Energy Sources 1. Coal 2. Crude Oil 3. Natural Gas

What is coal? Coal is a rock that is formed from the layering of plant and animal materials that have been compressed over millions of years. Some types of coal undergo lots of heat and pressure.

How do we get coal? Since coal is a sedimentary rock (and some types can be metamorphic), it is found far underground, we get it by digging it up. This is also known as mining.

How do we use coal for energy? Because it is a rock, in order to use coal for energy, we must burn it. Water heated by burning coal converts into steam and generates electricity. The electricity travels to us through wires!

What is crude oil? Crude oil (also known as petroleum) is a fossil fuel formed from prehistoric organisms whose remains settled at the bottoms of oceans and lakes millions of years ago.

How do we get crude oil? First, crude oil must be located underground. Next, Crude oil is removed from the ground by drilling deep wells and pumping it up to the surface.

How do we turn oil into energy? Once crude oil has been pumped to the surface, it is then transported to a refinery where it is refined into a number of fuel products, including gasoline.

What is natural gas? Natural gas is a fossil fuel formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions and millions of years ago.

How do we get natural gas? Like coal and oil, natural gas is found underneath the Earth’s surface. To bring natural gas to the surface, a hole must be drilled through the rock to release the gas under pressure.

What happens to the temperature as we travel towards the Earth’s core? Do you think natural gas forms deeper into Earth’s surface than oil? Why?

Timed-Pair Share! Write your answer to the question. Share your answer one at a time with your shoulder partner. You will have 30 seconds each. The person closest to the door starts!

How do we get natural gas? (continued) Natural gas forms as temperatures increase. However, gas will often rise closer to Earth’s crust and become “trapped” in sedimentary rocks directly below the surface.

How do we transport natural gas? 1. Gas is stored in wells underground. 2. Gas is transported in underground pipe to a processing plant to be cleaned. 3. Gas is compressed and sent (underground) to a gas company. 4. Finally, gas is sent (underground) to homes!

Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy is created by the splitting of uranium atoms in a process called fission.

What is Uranium? Uranium is a metal, which is found in rocks all over the world. While it is more common than silver, uranium is considered rare and cannot be replenished.

Nuclear Fission Nuclear plants use a certain kind of uranium, U-235, as fuel because its atoms are easily split apart. In nuclear fission, atoms are split apart to form smaller atoms releasing energy.

How do we turn uranium into energy??

Why did America start producing nuclear energy? (Answer this while you watch the video clip)
