l.6.1 Ensure that pronouns are in the proper case

What is a Pronoun? A pronoun takes the place of a noun or another pronoun. Personal pronouns can be subject, object, or possessive. They also come in the singular and plural forms.

Subject Pronouns Used as the subject of a sentence. May also be used as a predicate pronoun after a linking verb. Example: I am learning about the Mongolian ruler Genghis Khan. I is the subject pronoun.

Subject Pronoun List Singular Plural I we you he, she, it they

Identify Subject Pronouns Read each sentence with your partner. Identify the subject pronouns in each sentence. I went out to the grocery store. You are leaving to catch your 8:00 A.M. flight. They came by car from out of state. Tricia and I are about ancient China. The players are Aaron and I. The toughest opponents are Teresa and he.

Object Pronouns An object pronoun is used as the direct object of a verb, an indirect object, or as the object of a preposition. It is important to use them correctly when speaking and writing.

Object Pronouns Singular Plural me us you him, her, it them

Object Pronouns Read each sentence and work with your partner to identify object pronouns in each sentence. True animal stories fascinate Jen. Do you like them too? Jen gave me a book about a dolphin who guided ships. People gave him a hero’s welcome. Can you tell the story to her and me? The books were divided between Mike and me.

Subject and Object Pronoun Practice Read the short paragraph below. Write the correct subject or object pronoun for each underlined words. Many historians have written about Genghis Khan. Often these historians (1) describe Genghis Khan (2) as a cruel warrior who captured land for the people of Mongolia. However, this fierce leader (3) also united the people of Mongolia(4).
