AJAS Webinar Presentation August 2007 Lisa Blobstein, Communications Officer Karen Flam, Foundation Director Maimonides Geriatric Centre Montreal, Quebec, Canada

About the event Garage bands come together to showcase their talent and raise money for our long-term care facility- a great cause Bands made up of well-known Montrealers like doctors, lawyers, dentists and other professionals Band members sell the tickets to their friends and families – this is a critical element for success Started off as one night event- so successful moved on to two nights at a well-known and bigger rock venue It’s important to have the “right” people at the “right” time..local community celebrities at the height of their success

In the beginning… One of the board members, Robert Kertesz approached the Foundation Director about such an event in 2003 Robert contacted the local bands- many who were his friends- they were very interested!!! A key element is finding the right venue at the right price – it has have a grungy rock feel to it Event took on a life of its own!! First year sold out even before invitations were printed Got media sponsorship to help sell the event, that interest has continued year after year

Target Audience Baby-boomer generation Our goal was to try to make long-term care ‘sexy’ and make geriatric care more appealing by bringing on an event with such spunk and energy The parents of today’s baby-boomers are our current residents- baby boomers are our future residents Interest a younger demographic in Maimonides as a donor destination

Staff A dedicated committee of about 25 volunteers help with fundraising and acquiring sponsorship for the most part from their friends Office staff of 5 people put it all together (Foundation Director, Assistant, Bookkeeper, Secretary and Communications Officer) Our staff develop a very personal connection with donors and participants—a key to the success of the event At the event itself, a group of volunteers organized through the Volunteer Dept help with the setup

A Rock’n Success!! Event is a complete sell-out, year after year Lots of Sponsor interest- NEW donors and sponsors Raise profile in community- lots of media 2006 event raised $183,000 + Gain board members Other places want to copy event- eg Baycrest in Toronto Maimonides becomes recognized as THE long- term care centre when the need arises
