Creating Clusters in a Virtual Environment Purpose: To create a development environment with limited hardware resources that allows the testing of parallel programming code.

Summary of VMware + Bccd Step 1: Download VMware Server. Step 2: Download Bccd ISO image. Step 3: Install VMware Server. Step 4: Create a virtual machine. Step 5: Configure virtual machine to boot from Bccd ISO image. Step 6: Startup first virtual machine. Step 7: For each new virtual machine repeat steps 4 thru 6. Step 8: Now use Bccd on each virtual machine.

Step 1: Download VMware Server The VMware Server may be downloaded from the following URL:

Step 2: Download Bccd ISO Image The Bccd ISO image may be downloaded from the following URL:

Step 3: Install VMware Server Install VMware Server and follow the wizard to install the application on your local computer.

Step 4: Create a Virtual Machine A. Start VMware B. File > New > Virtual Machine C. VMware wizard appears: Next > Typical >Next D. New virtual machine wizard pops up: 1. Select Linux as the guest operating system 2. From version dropdown box select Turbolinux > Next

Step 4: Create a Virtual Machine E. Name your virtual machine (we chose BCCD1) > Next F. Select Use bridged networking > Next G. Specify Disk Capacity 1. Make Disk size.3 GB 2. Uncheck arrow next to Allocate all disk space now > Finish

Step 5: Configure Virtual Machine Configure Virtual Machine to boot from ISO image A. Highlight the virtual machine in left Inventory panel. B. From File Menu click VM > Settings C. In virtual machines dialog box highlight CD- ROM. D. Chose ISO image radio button. E. Click Browse button then browse to location that ISO image was downloaded to in Step 2 > OK

Step 6: Startup First Virtual Machine A. Highlight desired virtual machine in left Inventory panel. B. Use the green “Play” arrow to start the virtual machine.

Step 8: Virtual Machines & Bccd Bccd may now be run on each virtual machine.
