The Water Cycle Nicole Kinman

Content Area: Science Grade Level: 4 th Activity Summary: The summary of this lesson is to learn about the water cycle and the importance of it. Learning Objective: Given a PowerPoint, the students will identify the major components of the water cycle with 100% accuracy. GLE: GLE: Recognize the major components of the water cycle. SPI: SPI: Identify the basic features of the water cycle and describe their importance to life on earth. Accomplishment: The students should be able to explain the water cycle and its functions.

What is the Water Cycle? The water cycle is the movement of water to and from the Earth. Lets start with the steps of the water cycle 1.Evaporation- The water is taken from oceans, lakes, ponds, etc. 2.Transpiration- The water taken from trees, plants, grass, etc. 3.Condensation- The clouds form, from the evaporation. 4.Precipitation- Rain, snow, the water that was taken from evaporation and transpiration and stored in the clouds becomes rain, etc. 5.Accumulation- the precipitation that runs off mountains, volcanoes, etc. back into the bodies of water. Water Cycle Cont.! The water evaporates by using the Sun's heat to provide the energy to take the water. Underground water is the water that is trapped between rocks and clay because the precipitation was soaked into the ground. In Accumulation the water is called runoff. Try to label the diagram! Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Transpiration Evaporation Condensation Accumulation Runoff Water Vapor

The Sun uses its energy to take the water from bodies of water to form? Mountains Rivers Precipitation Accumulation

Correct! Precipitation is rain, snow, etc.

Water is always changing from liquid, _____, and ice. Solid Vapor Water Snow

Correct!! This process happens in a blink of an eye! It has been happening for millions of years!

The water cycle is also called ____. Rain Cycle Rain Cycle Weather Cycle Weather Cycle Geological Cycle Geological Cycle Hydrologic Cycle Hydrologic Cycle

Correct!! Yes, it is the journey water takes for the earth to the Sun and back.

Summary Today you have learned about the water cycle. You should understand each step: Evaporation, transpiration, condensation, accumulation, precipitation and runoff. Water is evaporated from oceans, rivers, trees, plants and etc. It is also changing from a liquid, vapor, and ice.
