Copyright in Website Development Legal Methods to Acquire Media Assets

Discussion Are all assets on the Internet free to use? If you create any assets who do they belong to? Discussion

Copyright You have to get copyright permission to use some assets In the UK the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 states how your assets can be protected. http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/copy/c-about/c-history/c-history-1988.htm Copyright

Find out 4 facts about copyright at http://www. copyrightservice. co Task

Creative Commons is one method of licensing images, sounds and other creative works that lets others use the work legitimately. http://search.creativecommons.org Creative Commons

Creative Commons gives creators the following options: Attribution: others can copy, distribute, display, and perform the copyrighted work — and derivative works based upon it — but only if they give credit to the original creator. Non-commercial: others can copy, distribute, display, and perform the work — and derivative works based upon it — but for non-commercial purposes only. No Derivative Works: others can copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of the work, not derivative works based upon it. Share Alike: others can distribute derivative works only under a licence identical to the licence that governs the original work. Creative Commons

You’ve created a graphic for a website and decided that other people can use it but you don’t want them to change it. Which Creative Commons permission should you apply? Attribution Non-commercial No Derivative Works Share Alike Question

Other methods to acquire assets legitimately may include: use Creative Commons search engines get permission from the copyright owner (eg the photographer) buy them (eg stock/royalty free photos) Other methods

Many websites and search engines offer ways to search for work that is labelled for reuse or labelled for reuse with modification. For example, Google allows users to set usage rights in advanced search. When using search engines to source assets, you should follow the link to check the licence details. Many creative works are shared with the condition that credit is given to the original creator e.g. “Please attribute Loraine Johnston as the creator of this work,” “© 2012 Loraine Johnston” Other methods

Upon conviction in the magistrates court the maximum term of incarceration in the UK for copyright infringement is 6 months and/or a "level five" fine of £5,000. Upon conviction in the Crown court the maximum term of incarceration in the UK for physical copyright infringement is 10 years and/or an "unlimited" fine.
