To know the importance of regulating our bodies. Success criteria- State what is meant by homeostasis. Identify what causes blood sugar levels to change. Explain how the hormones insulin and glucagon control blood sugar levels. Explain the symptoms and treatment of diabetes.

Homeostasis - involves maintaining a constant environment in the body Homeostasis makes sure our body has the correct levels of; Temperature Carbon dioxide OxygenWater Blood sugar To know the importance of regulating our bodies.

What is a hormone? Hormones are chemical messengers used in the body by the endocrine system. They co-ordinate our organs. Hormones are produced by glands. To know the importance of regulating our bodies.

How the hormones control blood glucose Describe what is happening at each labelled point. To know the importance of regulating our bodies.

Normal blood glucose level ( mg/100cm 3 blood) Insulin produced by the pancreas causes glucose to change to glycogen Stored in the liver and muscles Glucagon released and glycogen converted back to glucose Glucose rises (eat food) Glucose falls (exercise) Normal blood glucose level ( mg/100cm 3 blood)

Normal blood glucose level (________/100cm 3 blood) ________ released and _________ converted back to glucose Glucose rises (eat food) Glucose falls (exercise) Normal blood glucose level (________ mg/100cm 3 blood produced by the pancreas causes _____ to change to _______ Stored in the and ________

Read Diabetes symptoms and treatment sheet. Underline the key words as you read. EXT- Write 5 questions for someone else in the class to answer on this. To know the importance of regulating our bodies. Option 1- H

Symptoms of diabetes develop quickly and can be severe. Initial symptoms include: increased thirst, hunger and production of urine loss of weight, tiredness and nausea. Later symptoms include vomiting and abdominal pain. If untreated, diabetes can lead to coma and even death. The lack of insulin control in a diabetic means that blood glucose levels can rise dangerously high after eating, which can cause cell damage. To know the importance of regulating our bodies. Option 2- F

To know the importance of regulating our bodies. Option 2- F

How do we treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes? Half of the class read slide on type 1 and the other half on slide 2. Underline key words. Summarize your ideas on your mini whiteboard. To know the importance of regulating our bodies. Option 2- F

Type 1 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells in a person’s pancreas are destroyed, and their body cannot produce enough insulin. This means that glucose builds up in their blood. Type 1 diabetes often develops in childhood. People with type 1 diabetes must inject themselves with insulin before they eat. This helps to keep their blood glucose at a safe level. The amount of insulin needed depends on how much the person eats and how active they are. The injection is usually into the subcutaneous fat – the fat that is stored directly beneath the skin. To know the importance of regulating our bodies. Option 2- F

Type 2 diabetes develops when a person’s body becomes resistant to insulin. This type typically affects people over 40 years old, and accounts for 85–95% of people with diabetes. Most people with type 2 diabetes can manage their illness through diet and exercise. Physical activity will reduce the amount of glucose in the blood. Eating small, regular meals can stabilize blood glucose levels, and avoiding sugary foods can prevent blood glucose levels from rising. To know the importance of regulating our bodies. Option 2- F

How do you know if there is sugar in urine? 1.Add 10cm2 of urine to the boiling tube. 2.Add the same amount of Benedict’s solution, shaking gently and put into the boiling water. 3.Leave. 4.If the solution changes from blue-green to brick red sugar is present. 5.Put the samples in order of how much sugar is in it. To know the importance of regulating our bodies. LetterABCD Colour before Colour after Order

To know the importance of regulating our bodies. Success criteria- State what is meant by homeostasis. Identify what causes blood sugar levels to change. Explain how the hormones insulin and glucagon control blood sugar levels. Explain the symptoms and treatment of diabetes. Carry out an experiment to compare samples of urine.

To know the importance of regulating our bodies. Write a letter to the patient informing them of your test results. Provide them with information about diabetes and the kinds of symptoms they may experience if they have diabetes. Success criteria-
