Renewal is NOT recertification Recertification is what you must do if you allow your certificate to lapse When you renew, you… Maintain your designation as a NBCT and the right to use NBCT Use renewal to reflect on how your teaching practice continues to support student learning. Preserve your professional stature even after you retire, leave the classroom or change careers. Continue to have the opportunities as an NBCT to advocate for educational reform and champion policies that support teaching excellence.

What’s Different? Profile of Professional Growth The product is scored holistically. Components are not scored separately. Score reported as “Renewed” or “Not Renewed”. What is a PGE? Let’s see what you already know about PGEs Professional Growth Experiences

A PGE is a one-time workshop.

A PGE must evolve.

A PGE can begin before NBPTS certification.

PGE may be reported with unlimited documentation.

PGE must show indirect or direct impact on student learning.

A PGE demonstrates your on-going commitment or contribution to the profession.

PGEs should be multi-faceted.

You cannot write about a PGE if you are no longer in the classroom.

PGEs must demonstrate continued application of current National Board standards.

Definitions Profile of Professional Growth (PGG) The whole portfolio submission Professional Growth Experience (PGE) An activity that has allowed you to learn something new has influence within or beyond the classroom has direct or indirect impact on student learning may have begun before initial certification has continued to evolve significantly after certification Promotes continued professional involvement in a variety of areas consistent with the high and rigorous standards Provides an avenue for NBCTs to articulate and examine what certification still means Provides a reminder that NBC is a springboard to becoming a better educator Provides a singular focus that increased student learning is still what an NBCT is all about

Profile for Professional Growth Component One Four Professional Growth Experiences Three (3) pages of written commentary for each PGE Two (2) pages of samples of products for each PGE Your choice of PGEs is significant because they serve as the basis of components 2 and 3 as well as the reflection Must demonstrate: Current content knowledge and pedagogy Use of technology Ongoing, varied, multifaceted experiences Impact on student learning Consider the language of the rubric when choosing the four PGEs. “addresses (identified) needs in a variety of rich and powerful contexts” “candidate has provided evidence of professional growth that has evolved… and is varied and/or multifaceted” Consider the scoring criteria requiring that a candidate address the following: Certificate-specific content to remain current Pedagogical skills to remain current Acquisition of and/or effective and appropriate use of technology Interaction with colleagues, other professional groups, parents, and/or the community that has enhanced your professional growth. Keep in mind that for each PGE, you must: Provide a context that explains the need you were meeting (students, the professional community, and/or self) Explain how the PGE demonstrates a response to the identified need

Component Three Choose another PGE and show its application in your classroom or with colleagues One 6-minute unedited videotape, which may be segmented into a maximum of three parts OR eight representative pages of learner work Four pages of written commentary Application of a different PGE from Component one could be K-12 or adult learners 6 minute video 4 pages of commentary

Reflection Three pages of written commentary Analysis of relationships between practice and student learning Discovery of connections and patterns Awareness of NBPTS standards in practice

Profile for Professional Growth Scored holistically Components 2 and 3 flow from Component 1 All components will be evaluated as one entity. Renewed Level of the rubric provided sufficient evidence of professional growth that has evolved is varied and /or multifaceted has been a focus over extended period of time

Evaluation Criteria Identify and address significant needs of students, the professional community, and / or self Have acquired and / or deepened current certificate-specific content knowledge and have demonstrated it in your classroom practice
