Van Gogh Post-Impressionism By Will Heinberg and Ben Cleff

●In his early career, van Gogh painted with dark and melancholy colors that suited his subjects at the time- miners and peasant farm laborers. ●Worked with a sense of urgency on his paintings, which caused him a lot of stress ●Bold, dramatic brush strokes which expressed emotion and added a feeling of movement to his works. ●Rumored he used the impasto style (laying paint onto the canvas then painting) ●experimented with pointillist technique of the Neo- Impressionists- contrasting dots of pure color are mixed into the background color. ●Vincent Van Gogh sought to convey his emotional and spiritual state in each of his artworks. Style Self portrait with gray felt hat Wheat Field with Cypresses

Historical Importance ●One of the most well-known post-impressionist artists ●Was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland on March 30, ●For him, color was the chief symbol of expression. ●Studied with Cormon in Paris and met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin and tried to imitate their techniques while he was there. ●After meeting the impressionists, he began to lighten his very dark palette and to paint in the short brushstrokes of the Impressionists’ style and unsuccessfully tried to copy the artists’ styles, but developed his own bold and unconventional style. ●Regarded as vanguard figure in the history of modern art. ●His admiration for the Barbizon artists, particularly Jean-Francois Millet, influenced him to paint rural areas. ●In February 1888, Van Gogh left to live in Paris hoping to establish a community of artists in Arles.

Artworks STARRY NIGHT: Made in 1889, on oil on canvas. Made while he was staying in an asylum at Saint-Remy. Starry Night is believed to show the view from his bedroom window. Van Gogh used the impasto style while painting. Has intensely swirling patterns that roll across the surface like waves. The sun dominates vibrantly over the town. The houses surround a church, which its steeple rises sharply into the blue sky, and above the mountains in the background. On the left of the painting is a flame like cypress tree. The cypress tree reaches beyond the top of the canvas. The cypress can be seen as a bridge between life and death, the earth as life and death as sky as the sky relates to heaven. WHEAT FIELD WITH CYPRESSES:Made in 1889, oil on canvas. Not as exaggerated as Starry Night, but it does feature swirly skies. As seen in Starry Night, the flamey pattern of cypress trees are present in the landscape. The painting features blue-grey mountains in the background and a sun drenched wheat field. THE NIGHT CAFE: Made in 1888, oil on canvas. The subject matter conveys a sense of loneliness and desperation. The slouched drinkers and lone figure, along with the skewed perspective and stark colouring, create a and disturbing work. Van Gogh himself said the contrast of the colors express “terrible passions of humanity”. He also tried to make the colors create a night setting even though the setting takes place inside a cafe.
