It’s just a little weed?

“What’s the worst that could happen?”

Marijuana is known by many names including weed, pot, reefer, grass, hemp, dope, and Mary Jane. Marijuana is the female flowers and dried leaves of the hemp plant AKA cannabis sativa. It’s main intoxicant is THC which causes you to get “high”. It is a hallucinogen which distorts how the mind perceives the world we live in.

Aside from sore throats and chest colds, research has found that smoking one “joint” gives as much exposure to cancer producing chemicals as smoking five cigarettes. Marijuana smokers have poorer memories and mental aptitude than non-smokers.

Alcohol consists of one substance: ethanol Alcohol is eliminated from the body within a few hours Alcohol does not damage your immune system *Note: Alcohol can still be very harmful to the body, but it is important to understand the chemicals in marijuana as well. BUT…

Then Marijuana’s effects were “milder,” not lasting as long. Leaves of the marijuana plant were smoked (less potent). People started to smoke in their 20’s. Marijuana’s strength has increased by 2-7 times since the 1970’s (measured by THC levels). Flowering tops or buds of the plant are smoked (more potent). People start to smoke in mid-teen years (young users more at risk for adverse effects). Now Did you know marijuana is now more potent than it used to be?

Students in violation of the University’s marijuana policy may be sanctioned to the Center for Wellness Promotion (CWP) department for an assessment. Students required to complete CWP’s BASICS (an alcohol/drug education program) must pay $125 for their first sanction and $150 for subsequent sanctions!
