Doctrine 2 Unit 4

 …according to ______________  Foundational Doctrine (1Cor 15:1-3) ◦ Acts 2:23-24, 7:52, 8:32-35

1. The Promised Seed Read Genesis 3:14-15 what is being promised here? Can you trace this promise through Genesis? But this promise remains vague (ill defined)  1 Sam 17:45-49  Job 26:12-13  Hab 3:13

1. The Promised Seed In the New Testament? Galatians 4:4-5 (Romans 16:20)

2. The Passover Lamb What is Exodus 1-11 about? Read Exodus 12:1-13 What are Israel told to do and why? God saving his people in the midst of judgment is an important theme of salvation in scripture

Exodus is all about being rescued, but there are actually two rescues going on. There’s a rescue through judgment and a rescue from judgment. God’s people are rescued through judgment on Pharaoh – we find that on the outside of the sandwich, the bits of bread (11:1-10, 12:29-36). There, we read of how God killed Pharaoh’s firstborn son, the most devastating of all the plagues. This was the clincher, and as a result Pharaoh waved the white flag and let the people go… It is the filling of the sandwich that introduces the second theme: the rescue from judgment (12:1-28). There we read of how God’s people are spared from the plague only because of the following instructions about lambs and blood...Something has to be done, to avert the judgment. The verses at the heart of the sandwich are going to tell us the heart of the gospel.

2. The Passover Lamb Exodus 12:14, 17, 24, 26-27, The passover is an event worthy of remembrance Read Luke 22:7-32 What connections with Ex 12? What parallels does Jesus draw for his disciples? John 13:36…Ex 12:46 1 Peter 1:18-19, 1 Corinthians 5:7 What would be the equivalent for us of putting the blood on the doorposts today?

3. The Sacrificial System The sacrificial system was a painful reminder of what for Israel? Read Leviticus 16:1-22 How is Aaron to prepare himself? (v1-10) What happens on the Day of Atonement, why is it significant? (v11-34) The bull (v.11, 18 Goat 1 (v.15-19) Goat 2 (v.20-22, cf. v.10)

The book of Leviticus addresses the question ‘How can a holy God dwell in the midst of a sinful people?’ The answer for old covenant believers was a system of atoning sacrifices, with the Day of Atonement at its heart. Both the vocabulary of atonement and the fate of the scapegoat in Leviticus 16 depict the propitiation of God’s wrath by the substitutionary death of an animal. This anticipated the work of Christ in the new covenant, where God’s wrath against all his people was propitiated by the once-for-all substitutionary death of his Son. Pierced for our transgressions - Ovey, Jeffrey, Sach

3. The Sacrificial System Hebrews 10:4 – futility of animal sacrifices! Substitutionary Sacrifice in NT? - John 1:29 - Romans 3:25 - Romans 8:3 - Hebrews 10:8-14 What implications does this have for how we relate to God as Jesus’ church today?

3. The Suffering Servant What can you remember about him from last week? Read Isaiah 53:1-11 How is the work of the servant described? Any links to passover/sacrificial system? Focus shifts from sacrificial system to someone P_________ S_________

How is Jesus’ mission introduced in the Gospels? Matthew 1:21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." Luke 1:69,77 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David...to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Read John 12:

Read John 19:16-36 How many OT references can you find? From the cross we know Jesus is the one who has: 1. C ________ John 18:6,33-38, C ________ Luke 22:49-51, 22:34, Jn 19: I _________ John 18:2-3, 38-40, 19:4, 6 4. S ________ Matthew 27:51-54

Acts 2:36-38, Eph 1:17F_______ of S_____ Romans 3:21-24R______ before ____ Romans 6:16-18, Gal 3:22R___________ 1 John 2:1-2 S_____ of P_________ 2 Cor 5:21, Gal 3:13P______ S_________ Romans 5:10, Col 1:21-22 R_____________ Col 2:15, Eph 6:12 V____________

Why are these explanations attractive to many? Are they denying the cross? Satisfaction of God’s honour Solidarity with Suffering Humanity Example for us to embody

Precisely because the cross is so important, it is constantly under assault. Paul spoke about how in his day it was foolishness to Greeks and a stumbling block to Jews. The cross will never be embraced by a world committed to its own goodness and independence. Where these attitudes infect Christian thinking the cross will be pushed to the periphery. Yet for those who understand how lost they were and the wonder of God’s salvation in Christ, the whole of life will be lived under the tutelage of the cross Notes – Page 76
