Computing At Argonne (A Sampler) William Gropp

Argonne National Laboratory SOS 11 Reorg! New Computing and Life Sciences Directorate –Headed By Rick Stevens –Contains Mathematics and Computer Science Division – Rusty Lusk is our new division director Biosciences Division, others Argonne Leadership Computing Facility – Ray Bair is founding division director

Argonne National Laboratory SOS 11 Breadboard Cluster at Argonne MCS 24-node dual-processor dual-core cluster –2.8GHz Opteron cores –4GB DDR2 memory per node Networks: –NetEffect 10GE iWARP –QLogic InfiniBand –Myricom Myri-10G –Chelsio 10GE TCP Offload Engines Runs the Cobalt system management software –Boot your own OS image with each run (if you want to) –Great testbed for OS and middleware work

Argonne National Laboratory SOS 11 Our New Big Machine What I can officially tell you about our new machine See wikipedia

Argonne National Laboratory SOS 11 What is the ALCF? The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility is a new division at Argonne –A peer of the Mathematics and Computer Science Division –A home for Petascale computing at ANL –ACLF is currently home to a 1k node (5.6 TF) BG/L; deploying next generation BlueGene this fall –DOE INCITE Program awards time to open science projects; 9 currently awarded 10M CPU Hours (on BG/L at ANL and IBM) Announced Plans 2007 –Increased to 9 INCITE projects; continue development projects –Install 100 teraflops next gen Blue Gene system (late 2007) 2008 –Begin support of INCITE projects on next generation Blue Gene –Add Teraflops Blue Gene system

Argonne National Laboratory SOS 11 ALCF Organization Management Team: Division/Project leadership, budget/finance, and administrative staff User Services & Outreach Group: Provide the ALCF outward facing interface to current and prospective users and stakeholders. Application Performance Engineering & Data Analysis Group: Assist Leadership Projects with code analysis, tuning and analyzing their output. Leadership Facility, Operations and Networking Group (Core Services): Provide a stable, secure production capability computing environment. Extreme Data Systems Group (Advanced Services): Provide high performance data and network services.

Argonne National Laboratory SOS 11 How Does ALCF Fit Into DOE Leadership Computing Facility Strategy? DOE-SC selected the ORNL, ANL, and PNNL team (May 12, 2004) based on a competitive peer review of 4 LCF proposals –ORNL will deploy a series of systems based on Cray’s XT3/4 250TF/s in FY07 and 1000TF/s in FY08/9 –ANL will develop a series of systems based on IBM’s 100TF/s in FY07 and TF/s in FY08/FY09 with IBM next generation Blue Gene –PNNL will contribute software technology DOE SC will make these systems available as capability platforms to the broad national community via competitive awards (e.g. INCITE Allocations) –Each facility will target ~20 large-scale production applications teams –Each facility will also support development users DOE’s LCFs complement existing and planned production resources at NERSC –Capability runs will be migrated to the LCFs, improving NERSC throughput –NERSC will play an important role in training and new user identification
