Produced in Chembakolli…

Discussion Points What do you think the difference between CASH CROPS and FOOD CROPS is? When might the villagers plant their crops?

The History of Tea Tea has been around for more than 5000 years. During this time it has influenced lots of cultures, world leaders and even a couple of wars! Tea is thought to be more than a favourite drink. It is also thought to have great healing and medicinal uses.

Tea's history began nearly 5000 years ago in Ancient China…. The Emperor Shen Nung was not only the Emperor of China but also a scientist. He was said to have demanded that all of his drinking water be boiled as a way to cleanse it before it was drank. His obsession with hygiene lead to the discovery of tea……. China India England

While on a road trip to a distant realm of China he stopped for a rest. While the water was being boiled, dried leaves from a nearby bush fell into the water causing the water to become brown in colour. The emperor tried the drink even though it had turned brown and right away fell in love with it, thus the world obsession with tea was born.

Where is tea grown? China Japan Taiwan India Sri Lanka

Why is Tea so important?  Many areas in India have chosen to plant tea because it is a permanent crop so allows the people to claim their land for many years Tea provides a regular monthly income and is the main economy for the country

“I like hot tea and cold tea! I like hot tea in January when it is cold, and cold tea in July when it is hot!” Kirimaran from Chembakolli (8 years old)

Assess your learning so far I have learnt … or I would still like to find out …

Tea in Chembakolli… Adivasi people started the production of tea in Chembakolli. Adivasi means ‘first people’ and they have lived in the Nilgiri Hills surrounding the village for over a thousand years. Tea is one of the most popular drinks in Chembakolli. The villagers of Chembakolli grow tea called Pure Nilgiri Tea, which is grown in the nearby Nilgiri Hills.  As a custom, in India, Black tea is taken with milk and sugar. Spiced tea, known as ‘Chai’ or ‘Masala Chai’ added with pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and sugar is also very popular. Tea time is a chance to relax, think about the day and enjoy spending time with friends….
