Why did men fight in the First World War? Aim - To decide how far you agree with Niall Ferguson’s interpretation that “men may have fought simply because fighting was fun ”

Starter Watch the clip of fighting in World War One- write down 6 words which best describe the conditions faced by the men. What do you think kept might have kept them fighting? – Discuss with a partner and decide on at least four reasons Tv5gBa9DQs Tv5gBa9DQs.

How do historians write ? A strong BIG POINT A strong BIG POINT Lots of supporting facts Lots of supporting facts Supporting quotes from people who were involved Supporting quotes from people who were involved Sometimes an argument against their big point? Sometimes an argument against their big point?

What is Niall Ferguson’s argument ? Underline BIG POINT – explain it in your own words Underline a good quote from somebody – explain what it’s saying Underline a few supporting facts – sum up what he’s saying These points suggest that this isn’t a strong argument- sum up what he’s saying I think that this is a convincing argument for men fighting because-

What is his argument and how convincing is it Niall Ferguson argues that soldiers kept on fighting because… In support of this he tells us… Furthermore he gives quotes to back up his point, for example, I think this argument is convincing/ not convincing because…

Now have a go yourself Read the other section of the book with your partner – again – underline the main argument, some supporting details and some quotes

Is this a convincing argument I find this argument more/ less convincing that the other argument because…

Plenary What have you learnt about how historians write? What have you learnt about why men fought?

Plenary- How far do you agree with Niall Ferguson’s interpretation? Niall Ferguson argues that “men may have simply fought because they thought fighting was fun”. The aim of this piece of writing is to explain whether or not I agree with this point of view. One argument he puts forward for men fighting is that they were forced to. He suggests that- I find this a convincing argument because-/ or not very convincing- On the other hand Ferguson also suggests that men fought because…… He suggests that- I find this convincing because-
