F IVE F OOD G ROUPS F OR H EALTHY E ATING Fruits Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the Fruit Group. Vegetables Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as a member of the Vegetable Group. Grains Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product Proteins All foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the Protein Foods Group. Dairy All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered part of this food group. Most Dairy Group choices should be fat-free or low-fat.

J UNK F OOD While junk food is not healthy for you, it is okay to eat in moderation. This means every once in a while, not everyday. Junk food harmful to many parts of the body: Salt is bad for our blood pressure Sugar is bad for our teeth Fried food hurts our heart This type of food can also cause you to gain weight and cause obesity.

T IPS F OR H EALTHY E ATING Make at least half your grains whole grains Vary your veggies Buy fresh and in season vegetables. Keep a bowl of whole fruit on tables, counters, or in the refrigerator. Choose fat-free or low-fat milk. Choose lean meats and trim away all visible fat. Clean and wash all fruits and vegetables. Wash your hands after touching any raw meats.

Healthy Weight Our weight has a big impact on our overall health; when we are overweight, our bones and backs can hurt from carrying all the weight. Healthy Heart Our heart is what keeps us alive.
