Drawing and Painting Fun (5th) - Two artists -

Remember the parts of the body Let’s play “Simon says touch your…”.

PORTRAITS Artists often paint pictures of people: these pictures are called PORTRAITS.

PORTRAITS Sometimes PORTRAITS look very real, almost like a photo. This style is called REALISM.

Other artists made some of their paintings unusual by distorting and rearranging parts of them. This style can be IMPRESSIONISM, CUBISM...

Open your books at page nine, please. Look at the first picture, what colours does Van Gogh use? Are these colours warm or cold? Look at the second picture, is it realistic or is it distorted? Which parts of the woman’s body has Picasso distorted?

Now, open your books at page ten, please. You’re going to do your own version of “The sailor”. First, use a pencil to sketch the outline of the body. Then, use the colours red, yellow, blue and green.

When you finish, you’ll do a double version: impressionist and cubist portraits. And they’ll be displayed on the walls of our classroom.
