2006 Version 2.0CSEP-CPT Musculoskeletal Fitness Case Study 1 Case Study Bob is a 36 year old male (70 kg) who is interested in starting a musculoskeletal fitness training program. At present, he does not do any strength training but performs a fair amount of physical labour in his job as a construction worker. Bob completed a single-stage bench press and leg press test using a Universal machine. Results are below. ExerciseWeight Lifted (lbs) Reps to Fatigue Bench Press9010 Leg Press2404

2006 Version 2.0CSEP-CPT Musculoskeletal Fitness Case Study 2 Task Calculate his predicted 1-RM for bench press and leg press. State how you would explain the results to Bob. Determine the exercise intensity for Week 1 of Bob’s program Determine the starting weight that is equivalent to the prescribed exercise intensity for the bench press and leg press exercise. List the resistance training exercises (in the correct order) that you would have Bob perform

2006 Version 2.0CSEP-CPT Musculoskeletal Fitness Case Study 3 Calculate Predicted 1-RM determine %1-RM from # of reps completed divide weight lifted by % 1-RM EXAMPLE: Bench Press: Client performed 10 repetitions of 90 lbs 10 repetitions = 75% 1-RM 1-RM = 90 lbs lifted/ RM = 120 lbs Leg Press: Client performed 4 repetitions of 240 lbs 4 repetitions = 90% 1-RM 1-RM = 240 lbs lifted/ RM = 267 lbs Reps Completed% 1-RM

2006 Version 2.0CSEP-CPT Musculoskeletal Fitness Case Study 4 Explain Results Your predicted 1-RM represents your muscular strength, or the maximum force a muscle or muscle group can exert in a single contraction. The benefits of increasing muscular strength are unrestricted ability to perform daily activities, ability to cope with emergencies, reduced injuries and disabilities, healthy aging and maintenance of functional independence, and a healthy back. Compared to other males of a similar age range your predicted 1- RM of 120 lbs for bench press places you in the ‘average’ category while your predicted 1-RM of 267 lbs for leg press also places you in the ‘average’ category.

2006 Version 2.0CSEP-CPT Musculoskeletal Fitness Case Study 5 Exercise Intensity for Week 1 Appropriate Intensity for Bob at Wk 1 %1-RMSets/RepsExercises 70-75% 1-RM 1 set 8-12 reps 8-10 exercises JUSTIFICATION: Predicted 1-RM for both leg press and bench press is average. Already performs physical labour in job. = [target intensity * predicted 1-RM Lower target (bench press) =0.70 * 120 lbs = 84 lbs (=110 lbs for most equip.) Upper target =0.75 * 120 = 90 lbs 1 set to start 8-12 reps Lunge, bench press, lat pull down, leg extension, triceps push- down, biceps curl, back extension, leg curl, partial curl-ups

2006 Version 2.0CSEP-CPT Musculoskeletal Fitness Case Study 6 Design a 4 week program for Bob Client goals are to improve musculoskeletal fitness. Considerations: –Works Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm with a 30 min lunch break. Drives to work.. –Lives close to a recreational facility with a weight room. Design a 4 week musculoskeletal fitness program following the CSEP-CPT prescription card in the back of the CPT manual. SMART principles: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed
