Sutherland Volleyball Academy Information Meeting April 16, 2012

First Volleyball Academy program available in the North Vancouver District. A unique partnership between Sutherland Secondary School, the North Vancouver School District and Volleyball Canada. Volleyball Academy Overview

Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence

1. Canadian athletes have poor fundamental volleyball skills. 2. Canadian year old athletes are around 100 hours/year short in the LTAD recommended amount of practice time. 3. Canadian youth are coached by volunteers, whereas other top countries use paid professionals 4. Very few athletes are training enough, in a quality environment. Target of 800 (per gender) across Canada for grades What is the problem?

5 VCCE programs are running – Richmond, Langley, Abbotsford, Victoria and Kelowna. Plans to expand to each College and University in the Province 10 new coaches (2 missing). Primarily assistant coaches of CIS programs and head coaches of CCAA programs. What is happening in BC?

1. Provide training for year olds 2 days a week for 6.5 months (100 hours). This allows us to reach the recommended 4 days a week for 9 months. 2.Use professional ‘development coaches’ What is the Solution?

Educational Goals To provide additional volleyball training for students within the guidelines set by the British Columbia Ministry of Education so students may simultaneously receive course credit for Physical Education in grades 8 through 12 while developing individual skill sets. To provide key fitness deliverables such as weight training, rhythmic movement, leadership skills development and fitness testing. To support the development of personal goal setting and self-assessment and establishing the leadership skills for effective personal and social responsibility. To encourage students to apply leadership skills by leading in-class activities and active participation in local community service/volunteer work.

What does the program look like? Cohort 1 – High Performance Stream Volleyball Canada identified group (tryouts) student-athletes 6:30am-8:00am 4 times/week 1:6 ratio or better (6 athletes on one court) 2 training sessions in week 1, 3 training sessions in week Strength and Conditioning sessions per week (with certified coach, monitoring progress). 50 total sessions. 10 month program, following school schedule. $2, program fee (10 monthly payments) *TBC

What does the program look like? Cohort 2 – Competitive Stream Lottery system for those athletes not selected to HP Stream 30 student-athletes 6:30am-8:00am 3-4 times/week 1:10 ratio or better Two training sessions in week 1. Three training sessions in week Strength and Conditioning sessions per week (with certified coach, monitoring progress). 34 total sessions. 10 month program, following school schedule. $1, program fee (10 monthly payments) *TBC

What are the next steps? Tryout date: May 29 th Tryout location: Harry Jerome Sports Centre Registration, medical and bursary forms must be submitted on or before May 29, The first payment will be due and cashed upon acceptance into the program. Nine post dated cheques, dated October 1, 2012 through to June 1, 2013 will be collected at a later date. *Payment method TBC
