Geothermal Energy By: Lindsey!

What is it? Geothermal Energy is a healthy, cheap, and non-pollutant way to get energy. It has been used for thousands of years worldwide. It is very good for our environment and growing in popularity. It is not as expensive to use as other power facilities, The only big problem is that only certain places in the world hold immense Geothermal Energy.

How does it work? Geothermal energy when creating electricity and energy is made by, When humans drill holes into the ground deep enough to reach a hot spot etc. of rocks heated up underneath ground. The power station above uses a well to pump down cool water onto the hot rocks, this creates steam that goes up another well where it reaches the surface and purifies. The purified steam goes through turbines which drive electric generators that produce electricity and energy.

Thermally active Hot-Spot, New Zealand

Heat under the earth

The five w’s Who?: Prince Piero Ginori Conti was the first man to ever create a Geothermal Power Plant. What?: Prince Piero Ginori Conti created the first Geothermal Power Plant. When?: In 1904. Where?: The first Geothermal power plant was created in Landrello, Italy. Why?: To introduce a new, Healthier, Easier and more non-pollutant way of creating power and energy.

Finding a Hot-Spot There are only certain places where you can build Geothermal Power stations, not every place has rocks hot enough to produce steam. You will however find Hot-Spots when you have: The earths large oceanic crust plates collide and slide beneath each other. Spreading centers where plates begin to slide apart. Hot-spots, which are fixed points in the mantle that produce a constant flow of magma that rises to the earths surface. This is also one of the reasons how volcanoes are formed. Some places that have Geothermal Power stations are: United States, Italy, New Zealand, Iceland, Mexico, Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan.

Interesting Facts The word “Geo” comes from the Greek term, earth. “Thermal” comes from the Greek term heat. The first Geothermal Power Station was created in Landrello, Italy. Other uses for Geothermal energy is: Drying Vegetables,Hot springs, Speeding the growth process of fish, shrimp, and Alligators.
