Creating a Works Cited page using the APA format. Also known as a Bibliography

Why do we have to cite sources? Legality When someone creates something (website, song, book, movie, etc.) they are given a copyright, which means that work is legally theirs to use. If you don’t get their permission or cite their source correctly they can pursue action through the legal system. In a school environment, this action is called plagiarism. Every school will take disciplinary action if students are found plagiarizing work. This is a LEVEL 3 INFRACTION according to the NYC Dept. of Eduation.

Rules and examples Books: Author's last name, first initial. (Publication date). Book title. City of publication: Publishing company Examples: McNeese, T. (2006). Alexander Hamilton: framer of the Constitution. Philadelphia, Pa.: Chelsea House Publishers.

Rules and examples Encyclopedia or Dictionary: Author's last name, first initial. (Date). Title of Article. Title of Encyclopedia (Volume, pages). City of publication: Publishing company. Examples: Merriam-Webster's collegiate dictionary (10th ed.). (1993). Springfield, MA: Merriam-Webster.

Rules and examples Magazine and Newspaper Articles: Author's last name, first initial. (Publication date). Article title. Periodical title, volume number(issue number if available), inclusive pages. Do not enclose the title in quotation marks. Put a period after the title. If a periodical includes a volume number, italicize it and then give the page range (in regular type) without "pp." If the periodical does not use volume numbers, as in newspapers, use p. or pp. for page numbers. Unlike other periodicals, p. or pp. precedes page numbers for a newspaper reference in APA style. Examples: Harlow, H. F. (1983). Fundamentals for preparing psychology journal articles. Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology, 55,

Rules and examples Website or Webpage: Author, A. (Date Published). Article name. Name of website. [Retrieved] Date, [from] URL of Website When citing Internet sources, refer to the specific website document. If a document is undated, use "n.d." (for no date) immediately after the document title. Break a lengthy URL that goes to another line after a slash or before a period. Continually check your references to online documents. There is no period following a URL. If you cannot find some of this information, cite what is available. Examples: History Channel. Retrieved Sept 23.

Where do I find all this info In books, the info is all contained within the first 5 pages BEFORE the table of contents or first page of text. For encyclopedias/dictionaries, the author info and article title will be with the article. In magazines / news papers look at the front page of the paper for dates and periodical title, look at the article you’re reading for all else. For websites, look for info in the title bar, and look for an “about us” link/tab.

If a source has more than one author, alphabetize using the first one. If an author is unknown, alphabetize that source using the title instead

Task Take the samples from your handout and create a bibliography Be sure that they are in the correct order! Remember if there is no last name, use the title or next available piece of information.
