Basic Teachings of Islam Leeds Makkah Masjid Funeral Prayer –

Funeral Prayer It is Sunnah to lie down the dying person on his right side with his face towards the Qibla. If that is not possible then lie him on his back and his feet towards Qibla with his head slightly raised (by placing a pillow underneath it) so that he faces Qibla and not the sky.

Funeral Prayer His friends and relatives should sit near him and recite Sarah Yaaseen. The presence of righteous people around the dying person will be full of blessing. We can also put perfume near him. People can also say Shahaadah aloud: –I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad Allah's Messenger. We should not order the dying person to declare Shahaadah. Instead people should start reading it so the dying person joins in.

Funeral Prayer Funeral Prayer is a communal obligation on those alive – Fard Kifaya. In a location even if one person performs Janaza then all the others are relieved of the obligation. But only those who perform the funeral prayer will receive the reward for doing so.

Conditions of Funeral Prayer The deceased person must be a Muslim. –It is Haraam to offer funeral prayer over a non-Muslim body, as it is commanded in the Holy Qur'an: "And never pray over any of their dead.“ The whole or at least half of the body, including the head be present for it is not permitted to pray on an absent body. The body to be clean: –It is not permitted for a prayer to be performed before the body has been given a bath or Tayam-mum.

Conditions of Funeral Prayer The body to be in front of the congregation: –The prayer will not be valid if the body is behind the congregation. The body must be place on a still place: –At the time of the prayer the body must not be on a means of transport or be carried on the hands or shoulders of any people.

How to Perform Funeral Prayer The Intention for the funeral prayer is: I intend to pray funeral prayer with 4 additional Takbeer. Glorifying Allah Almighty Sending blessings on our beloved Holy Prophet Praying and asking for forgiveness for this deceased person. Facing Qibla and behind this Imam.

How to Perform Funeral Prayer The funeral prayer is performed behind an Imam. First perform Takbeer: –Raising hands to the ears, saying Allah o Akbar and folding the hands just beneath the naval The Imam will say Takbeer aloud, people will follow saying Takbeer quietly.

How to Perform Funeral Prayer Thana After first Takbeer, read Thana (Glory be to You, 0 Allah ! and all praise be to You, blessed is Your Name and High is Your Majesty, Your praise is great and there is none worthy of worship but You.)

How to Perform Funeral Prayer Darood After reading Thana, Imam will say second Takbeer and then read Darood shareef. While saying 2 nd, 3 rd, and 4 th Takbeer in Funeral Prayers, hands are not raised to the ears. Hands are only raised to the ears on 1 st Takbeer. People will follow him by saying Takbeer quietly and then reading Darood Shareef:

How to Perform Funeral Prayer (0 Allah ! bestow blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad just as You bestowed upon Ibraheem and the family of Ibraheem. Undoubtedly You are Praiseworthy and Great.)

How to Perform Funeral Prayer Dua After reading Darood, Imam will say 3 rd Takbeer and then read Dua. People will follow him –(0 Alah ! forgive our alive and our deceased and those who are present and those who are absent and our minors and our elders and our men and our women. 0 Allah ! whoever You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam and he who You give death, give him death upon ( faith of ) Islam.)

How to Perform Funeral Prayer After reading Dua, the Imam will say the 4 th Takbeer. The people will say the Takbeer quietly. Finally the Imam will perform Salam on both sides and the people will follow him. At the end of the funeral prayer, more Duas can be said for the deceased person.

How to Perform Funeral Prayer If a child has passed away, then the following dua can be read after the 3 rd Takbeer: In case of Boys: (0 Allah ! make him a forerunner for us, make him a means of reward for us, make him a treasure for us, make him an interceder for us and accept his intercession.)

How to Perform Funeral Prayer If a child has passed away, then the following dua can be read after the 3 rd Takbeer: In case of Girls: (0 Allah ! make her a forerunner for us, make her a means of reward for us, make her a treasure for us, make her an interceder for us and accept her intercession.)

Funeral Prayer for a Martyr A Martyr is someone who has been brutally killed whether it be in a battle, by rebels or robbers. Unlike other deceased people, the dead bodies of martyrs should not be washed. They should be shrouded in the same clothes they died in, after removing what is unsuitable, for example furs, stuffing and shoes. If the clothing is less than the Sunnah shroud it is permissible to put extra cloth on. The funeral prayer should be performed and they should be buried with the same clothes.

Making Dua for Deceased People When a person passes away from this world, they still have connection with their loved ones. Our connection does not stop with them. Indeed, after their death, they are more in need of our support in the form of our Duas and Charity. As a dead person cannot perform anymore actions, the deceased family can perform charitable acts and ask Allah Almighty to give the reward (Thawab) of those good actions to the deceased person. These charitable actions include: –Giving money to masjid, madrasah and other good causes –Looking after widows, orphans and other needy people –Distributing free Islamic and other useful literature –Performing Nafl (voluntary) worship

Making Dua for Deceased People Apart from charity, we can also make Dua for the forgiveness of the deceased people. Supplication can be made at any time, any place and in any language. It has been ordered in the Holy Quran to pray for forgiveness of living and deceased people: –رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ –“O our Lord forgive me, my parents and all the believers on the Day of Judgement.“ (Qur an:14:41) –رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ –“O our Lord forgive us and our brothers who have passed away before us.“ (Quran:59:10)

Making Dua for Deceased People Similarly, Holy Prophet has also encouraged us to pray for the dead ones: –Hadrat Umm Salma (ra) says the Blessed Prophet said: "When you visit a sick person or a dead always say something good about them since the angels say Ameen to whatever you say." (Muslim) –Hadrat Abu Huraira (ra) reports the Blessed Messenger said, "When you pray the funeral prayer make sincere supplication for him."(Abu Dawood) –Hadrat Ali (ra) reports from the Blessed Messenger, he said: "Whoever passes by a cemetery and recites Surah Ikhlaas eleven times and then blesses the dead people with its reward will be rewarded with merits equivalent in number to the dead."

Making Dua for Deceased People Hadrat Anas (ra) reports: He said, O Messenger of Allah, we give charity for our deceased and we perform Hajj on their behalf and we supplicate for them, do all these deeds reach them? The Holy Messenger said: "Yes, they do get them and they are happy with them like anyone of you is happy when a tray of gifts is given to him." A person should recite whatever is feasible from the Qur'an, e.g. Surah Fatihah, from the start of Baqarah to Muflihoon (verse 1-5), then Surah Ikhlaas three or seven times, then say, “OAllah! deliver the reward of what we have recited to so and so."

Making Dua for Deceased People Hadrat Abu Huraira (ra) reports : The Messenger of Allah said: "When a person dies all his activities come to an end except three: chairty that is continuous, knowledge which benefits and righteous child who prays for him.“ (Muslim) Hadrat Abu Huraira (ra) says that the Messenger of Allah said: "Allah Almighty will raise the rank of a righteous person in paradise, he will ask in amazement O Lord! where is this for me? Allah will say: This is because of your son's supplication for you.“ (Ahmad)
