Exploring Humility April 27

Think About It … What are some things people try to run away from, things people try to avoid? Jacob had run away from a brother who was mad (with good cause).  Today we see how Jacob had to humble himself to re-establish relationship

Listen for Jacob’s plan to minimize risk. Genesis 32:3, 6-8 (NIV) Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom. … [6] When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."

Listen for Jacob’s plan to minimize risk. [7] In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well. [8] He thought, "If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape."

Assess the Situation Why was Jacob fearful? Based on what you know about the past history between these two brothers, what feelings do you think Jacob might have been having? What was Jacob’s strategy?

Assess the Situation How could pride affect one’s ability to accurately assess a difficult situation like this? How could humility help us assess our situation more accurately?

Listen for specific requests in Jacob’s prayer. Genesis 32:9-12 (NIV) Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O Lord, who said to me, 'Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,' [10] I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two groups.

Listen for specific requests in Jacob’s prayer. [11] Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. [12] But you have said, 'I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.' "

Humble Yourself Before God With what words or phrases does Jacob express humility? Why do you think Jacob repeated God’s promises to Him? Why is prayer both humbling, yet empowering?

Humble Yourself Before God How does reflecting on God’s kindness and faithfulness humble you? When and why might we take these things for granted?

Listen for how Jacob demonstrated humility. Genesis 33:1-3 (NIV) Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two maidservants. [2] He put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear. [3] He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.

Humble Yourself Before Others What is significant about the order in which Jacob lined people up? How did Jacob demonstrate humility in this meeting? Suppose that instead he approached his brother’s group with a weapon in hand … what might have happened?

Humble Yourself Before Others What kinds of “weapons” do we “pull out” when we attempt a reconciliation? In Jacob and Esau’s culture prostration on the ground was a sign of a humble approach. How can we demonstrate a humble approach to a confrontation?

Listen for ways in which each brother was “at his best” in this situation. Genesis 33:4, 5, (NIV) [4] But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept. [5] Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. "Who are these with you?" he asked. Jacob answered, "They are the children God has graciously given your servant." … [9] But Esau said,

Listen for ways in which each brother was “at his best” in this situation. "I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself." [10] "No, please!" said Jacob. "If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably. [11] Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need." And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.

Acknowledge God’s Role What were Esau’s actions? What were Jacob's actions? If you were Jacob, how would Esau’s actions have humbled you even more?

Acknowledge God’s Role God had been gracious to both men and they said so. God has been good to you also. What are some ways you can humbly acknowledge that graciousness to others? Consider that we might not be accepted by the person to whom we humble ourselves. – even if our humble attempts of reconciliation are rejected by people, God accepts our humility and smiles on us – Humility always wins because it pleases God

Application Ask God to help you accurately assess your own attitudes about a need for reconciliation Consider all God has done to reconcile us with Himself God’s graciousness to us should compel us to pass that blessing to others
