EUDAT INFRA : Data infrastructures for e-Science (DG INFSO) Expected impact: Increase of the scale of federation and interoperation of data infrastructures, better exploitation of synergies with the underlying e-Infrastructures, reduction of costs, increase of the user base and bridging across disciplines, enabling of cross-fertilisation of scientific results and favouring of innovation. The removal of important obstacles concerning the open access to scientific information and data, as well as the improvement of preparedness to face the data "tsunami" of the next decade. Progress towards the vision of open and participatory data-intensive science. It is expected that the generic tools and services developed under the e-infrastructure part of the programme could be used for the further development of research infrastructures in Europe and in particular for the implementation of clusters of ESFRI projects. The strategy of VERCE, driven by the needs of data-intensive applications in data mining and modelling, aims to provide an e-science environment with comprehensive service-oriented architecture and framework adapted to the scale and the diversity of these applications, and integrating the community data infrastructure with Grid and HPC e-infrastructures. A first novel aspect of VERCE consists of integrating a service-oriented architecture with an efficient communication layer between the Data and the Grid infrastructures, and HPC, and a user-oriented scientific gateway. A second novel aspect is the coupling between HTC data analysis and HPC data modelling applications through workflow and data sharing mechanisms. VERCE will strengthen the European earthquake and seismology research competitiveness, and enhance the data exploitation and the modelling capabilities of this community. In turn, it will contribute to the European and National e- infrastructures. VERCE

VERCE – Virtual Earthquake and Seismology Research Community in Europe INFRA : e-Science environments (DG INSO) Expected impacts: The provision of advanced e-Science environment: architecture, framework, services and tools better tailored to the data-intensive applications needs in earthquake and seismology research, and supporting innovation and efficiency in the scientific discovery process. At the same time the lowering of barriers to entry in e-Science environment by researchers as well as the increased potential for Data, GRID and HPC e- Infrastructure usage by non-specialists, including "citizen" scientists and for public services. Coordinator and EPOS contact: Jean-Pierre Vilotte (CNRS-INSU) ENVRI (‘cluster proposal’): DG Capacity INFRA : Implementation of common solutions for a cluster of ESFRI infrastructures in the field of “Environmental sciences" (p 20 workprogramme). A project under this topic should implement harmonised solutions for the ESFRI Infrastructures in the field of Environmental Sciences on issues like, for example, architectures for centralised and decentralised infrastructures, standards and interoperability, metadata frameworks and other ICT related issues.
